Job summary

Mercury Systems is seeking a motivated Manufacturing Engineering Intern for the SMT factory in Phoenix, AZ. The role offers hands-on exposure to improving operational efficiencies across SMT workstreams.

You will assist with pick-and-place, reflow, wave soldering, conformal coating, and station-layout optimization while developing skills in data analysis and Lean/Six Sigma principles. This internship supports learning with real-world impact.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in bachelor’s or master’s in industrial/manufacturing engineering with relevant coursework.
  • GPA min 3.1; transcripts required.
  • Familiar with Excel, Minitab, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or simulation tools.
  • Understanding of Lean/Six Sigma.
  • Strong quantitative and statistical skills; able to analyze data.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

Job description

Internship from May/June - August/September 2027

No relocation assistance or housing provided

Mercury Systems is seeking a motivated and innovative Manufacturing Engineering Intern eager to learn, contribute, and bring fresh ideas to our Surface Mount Technology factory in Phoenix, AZ. In this hands‑on role, you’ll support improving operational efficiencies across the different workstreams within our SMT processes.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Support manufacturing operations by performing pick‑and‑place, chip and wire activities
  • Assist with reflow processes to ensure proper soldering and assembly quality
  • Support wave soldering operations to maintain consistent production standards
  • Contribute to conformal coating processes to protect electronic components
  • Help design and optimize station layouts to improve workflow and efficiency
  • Conduct capacity analysis to ensure production targets and resource planning are met
Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program inindustrial engineering manufacturing engineering, or a closely related field, with relevant coursework completed (e.g., operations research, statistics, systems design)
  • A minimum GPA of 3.1 is required. You will be asked to submit your transcripts during the review process
  • Familiarity with programs like Excel, Minitab, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or simulation tools (e.g., Arena, Simio) used for process analysis and optimization
  • Understanding of Lean/Six Sigma principles
  • Strong quantitative and statistical skills; Ability to work with data, perform statistical analysis, and apply mathematical models to solve efficiency and productivity problems
  • Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively

Preferred Qualifications:
  • CAD/Simulation Software Experience; AutoCAD, SolidWorks
  • ERP/MES Systems; SAP, Oracle, or other Manufacturing Execution Systems for production tracking and inventory management
  • Data Analytics & Visualization; Skills in Python, R, SQL, or Power BI/Tableau

Fulltime Equivalent Job Grade Salary Range for this position: $17.00 - 38.00/hour
