Job description

Austin Achieve Public Schools is a tuition-free, open-enrollment public charter school preparing Austin youth to attend and excel at the nation’s top colleges and universities.

The Teaching Fellow is an emerging educator role designed for individuals who are developing their instructional practice while making a meaningful impact on student achievement. Teaching Fellows are active members of the instructional team and will spend a significant portion of their day working directly with scholars, including leading classroom instruction.

Unlike a Lead Teacher position, the Teaching Fellow role is intentionally structured with additional coaching, shared instructional responsibility, and a narrower scope of ownership. Fellows gain hands-on teaching experience while receiving consistent feedback and development from campus instructional leaders and experienced teachers.

The goal of the fellowship is to build the skills, confidence, and demonstrated effectiveness necessary to progress toward increased instructional responsibility and future Lead Teacher opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead instruction for assigned classes, intervention groups, small groups, or designated instructional blocks.
  • Deliver high-quality, standards-aligned lessons using school-provided curriculum and instructional resources.
  • Internalize lesson materials and prepare effectively for daily instruction.
  • Monitor scholar understanding and adjust instruction based on real-time data.
  • Maintain strong classroom routines, expectations, and a positive learning environment.
  • Provide targeted academic support to scholars based on identified needs.
Classroom Instruction:
  • Lead instruction for assigned classes, intervention groups, small groups, or designated instructional blocks.
  • Deliver high-quality, standards-aligned lessons using school-provided curriculum and instructional resources.
  • Internalize lesson materials and prepare effectively for daily instruction.
  • Monitor scholar understanding and adjust instruction based on real-time data.
  • Maintain strong classroom routines, expectations, and a positive learning environment.
  • Provide targeted academic support to scholars based on identified needs.
Shared Instructional Ownership:

Teaching Fellows may serve as the primary instructor during designated portions of the school day; however, they operate within a supported instructional model rather than carrying the full scope of responsibilities expected of a Lead Teacher.

Depending on campus needs and the Fellow’s level of development, responsibilities may include:

  • Teaching designated class periods or content blocks.
  • Co-teaching alongside a Lead Teacher.
  • Providing intervention or acceleration.
  • Supporting scholars in small-group settings.
  • Providing classroom coverage when appropriate.
  • Gradually assuming additional instructional responsibilities as readiness is demonstrated.
Coaching & Professional Development:

Teaching Fellows are expected to actively participate in a structured development process, including:

  • Regular coaching and feedback from instructional leaders.
  • Classroom observations and action steps.
  • Lesson internalization and planning support.
  • Practice and rehearsal opportunities.
  • Professional development and instructional training.
  • Data analysis and reflection on scholar outcomes.

Fellows are expected to demonstrate consistent growth and apply feedback with urgency.

Role Scope & Equity

The Teaching Fellow position is intentionally differentiated from a Lead Teacher role.

While Fellows may independently lead classroom instruction, they receive greater instructional support and carry a reduced scope of overall teacher responsibilities. Lead Teachers are expected to demonstrate greater independence and ownership across areas such as long-term instructional planning, data-driven decision-making, curriculum implementation, family communication, classroom systems, and campus leadership.

Knowledge and Skills:

A successful Teaching Fellow:

  • Builds strong relationships with scholars.
  • Creates a safe, structured, and academically rigorous classroom environment.
  • Delivers effective instruction.
  • Uses scholar data to respond to learning needs.
  • Seeks, receives, and implements feedback.
  • Demonstrates reliability, professionalism, and strong follow-through.
  • Shows measurable growth in instructional practice.
  • Progressively demonstrates readiness for greater classroom ownership.
Growth Pathway

The Teaching Fellow role is designed to be a developmental pathway into teaching and instructional leadership.

Teacher Fellow - Increased Instructional Ownership - Demonstrated Readiness - Lead Teacher Opportunity

Advancement is based on demonstrated performance, instructional readiness, certification or role requirements when applicable, organizational need, and position availability.
