Substitute Food Service

Position Summary:

The Substitute Food Service Worker performs a variety of duties involved in the preparation and serving of food to students and staff in a school cafeteria setting. This role supports the day-to-day operations of school kitchens in the absence of regular staff and ensures compliance with health, safety, and sanitation standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen equipment, utensils, and food service areas.
  • Operate kitchen equipment such as ovens, mixers, warmers, and dishwashers.
  • Handle food according to proper sanitation regulations and follow safety standards.
  • Accurately portion and serve food to students and staff.
  • Wash dishes, trays, and utensils either by hand or with a commercial dishwasher.
  • Dispose of trash and clean work areas at the end of the shift.
  • Use and knowledge of personal protective equipment, i.e., goggles, gloves, cut-resistant gloves, and/or any other provided safety equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Graduate, or equivalent.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must possess a State Food Handler's Permit.
  • Previous experience in food service, school cafeterias, or commercial kitchens is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with the school staff so that the necessary support requirements for educational programs may be provided.
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate proper cooking methods and techniques.
  • Positive, motivating, and caring attitude for students and work well.
  • Applicant who possesses prior verifiable cooking training and/or experience and meets all of the above qualifications will be given preference.

Benefits: Employees anticipated to work more than 630 hours per year will be eligible for Benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB). Standard benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and Long-Term Disability.This position is not eligible for benefits.

Retirement Benefits: Positions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least 5 months over a 12-month period are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services. https://www.drs.wa.gov/ This position is not eligible for benefits.

Wage: $18.33 per hour
