Job Description

Classified- Registered School Nurse.This is a 6.5 hours per day, 5 days per week.

POSITION: Registered Nurse (RN)

LOCATION: Ida Nason AronicaElementary - Subject to changing locations to meet the District’s needs.

REPORTS TO: Nurse Supervisor and Director of Student Supports

JOB SUMMARY:

School Nurses are specialized nursing professionals that strive to advance the well-being of students and staff within the school environment. Promote healthcare and safety by handling the daily health issues that arise at the school(s) where they practice. Works closely with theNurse Supervisorand other members of the Ellensburg School District to meet the needs of the District. Implements the oversight, maintenance, and daily administration of the program's health procedures, policies and records.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provides professional nursing services including nursing assessments, identification of health problems, development of student health care plans, referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommendations for educational modifications, follow-ups and evaluations in accordance with District policy, professional standards of practice and health care provider orders.
  • May provide nursing support for a medically frail students.
  • Assess students referred for illness or injury and provides first aid for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating follow-up care.
  • Administers mandated screening (e.g. vision, hearing, etc), and makes referrals as needed for follow up care.
  • Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter (Work closely with Director of Nursing and building Counselors when reporting)
  • Maintains effective communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action to meet the health and safety needs of students.
  • Orders supplies (Discuss with Director of Nursing) and materials as needed for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Dispenses medications and/or trains other school employees to dispense medications in accordance with established State laws and District procedures.
  • Provides health information and counseling for students, parents and staff.
  • Implements a communicable disease prevention and control program in cooperation with local and state public health agencies.
  • Manages school health records in accordance with district policy and procedure and state law; and assists in the preparation and submission of reports for the District Nurse, Superintendent, and State Agencies as needed.
  • Document proficiently and accurately of all students, activities, and interventions that were completed for every student while under care by School Nurse.
  • Provides health related classroom instruction as needed.
  • Initiates contacts with and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
  • Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification, evaluation, and placement of students into special education programs, and writes the health component of the Individual Education Plan as needed.
  • Utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fields.
  • Participates as an active member of the school community, promoting health and wellness.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health related issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the ESA Certified School Nurse Supervisor and/or the Director of Student Services.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Possess knowledge of health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; stages of child development; pediatric and family nursing practices; community health concepts; and pertinent policies, codes, regulations and/or laws.
  • Possess skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job, including adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; safely handling hazardous materials/waste; operating equipment used in clinical setting; operating standard office equipment and pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate and/or classify data.
  • Communicate both orally and written in an effective manner.
  • Work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups in an effective manner.
  • Independently problem solve, analyze issues, interpret guidelines and create effective action plans.
  • Adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Work as a member of a team in an effective manner.
  • Assists Director of Nursing with developing or changing District Policies and Procedures as needed.
  • Dependable and reliable for all scheduled shifts.
  • Attend all field trips (ones that require a nurse) for their assigned school or other buildings as the District needs.
  • Required to accommodate students on a bus (before or after school), if medically necessary and required.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington and hold an unrestricted license.
  • Community Health or School Nurse experience preferred.
  • Current First Aid/CPR Card.
  • Must qualify to work in the proximity of children under the conditions of a WSP/FBI background check.
