JOB DESCRIPTION

Following the Health Services program direction and in collaboration with the Certificated School Nurses, Student Support Nurses provide professional health care to students to prevent, identify, and/or remediate health problems which may impair learning, social adjustment, or emotional well-being of students. Student Support Nurses may be assigned to an individual student or to a school.

Student Support Nurses assigned to a student or students in a classroom setting will be required to fulfill the job duties of a paraeducator while remaining medically vigilant of the student(s) under their care.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Completion of an accredited nursing program (Practical Nursing Certificate, ASN or BSN)
• Current RN or LPN licensure with the appropriate State Board
• Experience in nursing duties with children is preferred
• CPR and advanced First Aid Certification required
• Must attach unofficial transcript proving certification or degree to application.Official transcripts of all levels of education, including high school, required within 30 days of hire.
• Must pass basic skills test.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

• Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with students, parents, staff, medical care providers and other community members.
• Ability to maintain health records and confidentiality of students, parents and staff members.
• Must be detail oriented with excellent record keeping ability and clerical skills.
• Ability to respond to and handle emergency situations in a calm, professional, effective manner.
• Ability to work with students with a wide range of behaviors, emotional disabilities, and medical conditions.

• Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job-related activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Coordinate with Certificated Nurses in the management of the assigned school's health services program following requirements established by school district’s policies, procedures, and protocols, and by local, state and federal regulations and statutes.
• Coordinate with Certificated Nurses in student assessment and the development, implementation, evaluation and documentation of health care plans to provide appropriate care to students identified.
• May be assigned in a one-on-one capacity to implement the health care plan for an individual student with special health needs.
• May oversee daily operations of the assigned buildings’ health room including management of inventory and ensuring completion of all health-related documentation for school site.
• Provide professional nursing care, including emergency first aid treatment for student illness and injury occurring in school or while the student is under the jurisdiction of the school.
• Accurately administer medication, maintain documentation and care records, monitor effectiveness of medication and provide feedback to certificated nurses.
• Assist in coordinating and completing state mandated vision and hearing screening as required and in accordance with the Washington State Codes including re-screenings and referrals as indicated.
• Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases following the Infectious Disease Control and Immunization Guidelines.
• Work in cooperation with certificated and classified staff to promote medically effective, friendly and caring atmosphere for students, staff and parents
• Collaborate with Certificated Nurses and other Classified Nurses on a variety of topics impacting daily duties.
• Act as a liaison between the school, Licensed Health Providers, Parents, and other community agencies as directed.
• Recommend and help to implement modification of school programs to meet student health needs.
• Monitor school environment for safety and health concerns and alert administration of concerns identified.
• Maintain knowledge of current laws and regulations pertaining to nursing, health care, and school/public health.
• Perform other nursing duties as assigned according to licensure.
• Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
• Attend in-service trainings or other meetings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
