Job Description
Primary Purpose: Supervise campus custodial operations. Help and direct routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds as directed by the Environmental Coordinator and campus principal. Document work schedules and work requests using the Maintenance Management System.
Minimum Qualifications
Education / Certification:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (Recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting agency)
- Subject to testing for use of alcohol or controlled substances that violate law or federal regulations
- Successful fingerprinting background check (non‑refundable fee of approximately $50 paid by employee)
Required Experience:
- Two (2) years of experience supervising custodial services
Knowledge / Skills:
- Read and understand instructions in English for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures using the Maintenance Management System
- Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance
- Communicate effectively with personnel at his or her campus
- Use personal computer and smartphone
- Operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment
- Manage custodial supply inventory
- Diagnose and resolve problems
- Work independently
- Lifting a minimum of fifty (50) pounds
- Change lighting and ceiling tile
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Professionalism – The Educators' Code of Ethics is set forth in the Texas Administrative Code to provide rules for standard practices and ethical conduct toward students, professional colleagues, school officials, parents, and members of the community. - Organization Management – Direct, monitor and document the work of custodians at the assigned campus; establish and administer campus custodial supplies; screen, select, evaluate and train custodians; inspect district buildings and enable repairs; maintain school keys; manage assignment changes and document in the Maintenance Management System; coordinate moving and delivery of furniture, books and inventory; assist in setting up facilities for special events; schedule and supervise summer custodial projects; maintain and order supplies; notify maintenance department of emergency problems; oversee procedures for locking and safeguarding facilities; ensure exit doors are functional and secure.
- Organization Improvement – Implement and maintain cleaning schedules for floors, whiteboards, wastebaskets, air vents, windows, furniture, equipment and restrooms; make minor building repairs; keep building and grounds neat; comply with local waste disposal laws; inspect machines for safety; test and recommend supplies; prepare preventive maintenance schedules; conduct annual inventory; recommend equipment replacement.
- Professional Growth and Development – Provide training, orientation and documentation to custodians on cleaning procedures and proper use of chemicals and equipment; attend required meetings and professional development.
- Qualities of an Effective Head Custodian – Daily attendance and punctuality; follow established safety procedures; operate tools and equipment safely; work well with others; correct unsafe conditions; report uncorrectable conditions; comply with district policies and state/federal regulations; accept responsibility for efficient operation; perform additional duties as assigned.
- Supervisory Responsibilities – Supervise and direct the work of all custodians on campus.
Equipment
Buffer, scrubbers, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, ladders, lifts, electric drill and hand tools, shampooer, mop, broom, computer, telephone, fire extinguisher, two‑way radio, and other equipment associated with the position.
Working Conditions
Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:
- Work irregular and extended hours; respond to emergency situations and after‑hours calls as needed.
- Work with frequent interruptions; strenuous walking, standing, climbing, pulling, pushing, reaching, heavy lifting and carrying.
- Work outside and inside on slippery and uneven walking surfaces and ladders.
- Exposure to temperature extremes, humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration, dust, toxic chemicals and biological hazards.
