Norfolk Southern is seeking qualified candidates with recent experience in testing, installing, repairing, and maintaining telecommunications equipment, including but not limited to radios, digital microwave (MW), and radio frequency (RF) data link equipment.


Principal Duties:


  • Ensure compliance with all railroad safety, operational, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
  • Install, maintain, replace, and inspect communication equipment such as cables, computers, printers, monitors, radios, telephones, modems, wireless components, security cameras, batteries, connectors, and testing equipment.
  • Install, maintain, and check VHF radios, data circuits, automatic equipment identification, CCTV, radar, speaker systems, and other communication facilities.
  • Cut, splice, and pull cables on ground, poles, and towers.
  • Use trenching equipment to bury cables and equipment underground.
  • Receive and record inventory deliveries.
  • Retrieve parts from inventory to install and maintain equipment.
  • Transport tools and equipment to job sites by truck.
  • Install wiring in office and field locations.

Pay Rate:


Pay rate is subject to change based on Collective Bargaining Agreement and may vary by location.

  • During training - 75% of CET hourly rate. Current CET rate is $29.35/hr.
  • Upon promotion to CET - approximately $8,632.87/month.

Training:


On-the-job training for up to 1 year to qualify as a Communications Electronic Technician (CET). Promotion may occur sooner based on performance and qualifications.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an FCC license or NABOR certificate after hire.
  • Ability to work a 6-day schedule with one rest day (5 days work, 1 standby).
  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL after hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Two-year technical degree or equivalent experience in network management.
