Job summary

YAI - Seeing beyond disability in New York State is seeking a dedicated school-based paraeducator to support a student with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). You will help implement individualized goals, assist with ADLs, and encourage participation in activities to build social and communication skills.

You will work under supervision to ensure safety and effective execution of plans in classroom and therapy settings.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or its educational equivalent.
• Effective written and oral communication to motivate, listen, observe and collect data.
• Enthusiasm for working with children with disabilities, patience and empathy.
• Ability to remain calm and use good judgement in stressful situations.
• Ability to assist with ADLs, including toileting.
• Basic computer skills, including email and Workday.

Responsibilities

• Support a school-age child with I/DD to achieve goals as directed by teachers and related services team.
• Implement individualized goals under supervision and direction of staff.
• Assist with personal care and ADLs, including toilet needs.
• Promote social and communication skills through individual and group activities.
• Assist with transfers, positioning and therapy sessions as needed.
• Ensure health and safety of students in the school and community settings.
• Follow emergency procedures and school policies; participate in evacuations if required.
