Job summary

Aultman Health System in Canton, OH is seeking a Patient Companion to provide continuous observation and supportive care for patients at risk, under RN direction.

This role focuses on maintaining a safe environment, using therapeutic communication, assisting with basic needs, and following safety precautions. Ideal candidates have a high school diploma and basic computer skills; training in crisis prevention/de-escalation is valued and on-the-job onboarding includes required certifications.

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
• AHA healthcare provider training is recommended but not required (BLS).
• Basic computer skills are required.
• Ability to maintain composure and use de-escalation techniques in high-pressure situations.
• Crisis Prevention / De-escalation training completed within onboarding and annually thereafter.
• Adheres to attendance policy and punctual reporting.

Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 observation for patients on safety precautions under RN direction.
• Maintain line-of-sight observation during transport and procedures.
• Perform safety rounds and document observations in medical records.
• Implement environmental safety measures and report hazards to the RN.
• Assist with admission safety and inventory of patient belongings.
• Use therapeutic communication to support anxious or distressed patients.
• Initiate de-escalation strategies and notify RN of escalation.
• Activate unit emergency response as indicated for imminent threats.
• Assist with activities of daily living and basic comfort while observing.
• Support fall prevention and respond to call lights promptly.
