JOB PURPOSE

Optometrists provide ophthalmic services essential to the diagnosis and treatment of ocular conditions. They are required to contribute in aspects of the 4 Pillars of Clinical Care, Training and Education, Research and Quality as well as Management and Leadership. Optometrists functioning at this level may be able to plan, co-ordinate, conduct and supervise in the 4 Pillars mentioned above as required by the hospital.

Optometrists are expected to uphold professional ethics at all times and to consistently deliver standards of care as determined by the hospital and in compliance with the Optometrists and Opticians Board (OOB).

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Care
Quality of Work

Maintain consistent standards of care for complex cases:

  1. Optometrists will be expected to practice according to the clinical and quality service standards set by the department and hospital and adhere to relevant organisational and departmental guidelines in all areas of practice.
  1. Optometric assessment includes:
  1. The examination of patients with actual or potential visual impairments and limitations.
  1. The evaluation of the results of examination through analysis and synthesis of clinical reasoning and clinical tests.
  1. Optometric services are planned and conducted in the best interest of the patient based on optometrist’s knowledge of the patient’s eye condition, known indications and contraindications, planned treatment and management:
  1. General eye investigations include:
  • Refraction
  • Visual Acuity Assessment
  • Color Vision Assessment
  • Hess and Binocular Single Vision Test
  • Octopus Visual Field Assessment
  • Endothelial Cell Count Assessment
  • Corneal Pachymetry
  • Bandage Contact Lens Fitting
  1. Subspecialty services:
  • Ultrasonography
  • Refractive Surgery Clinic
  • Optometrist-led Eye Clinic (OPEC)
  • Eye Screening
  • Reading Centre
  1. Professional communication with patient, caregivers, medical practitioners and other Allied Health Professionals (AHPs).
  1. Documentation of relevant patient assessment, progress and management plans in accordance with the guidelines determined by the hospital.
  1. To achieve competency in all clinical assessment and meet the audit targets set by the department.
Maintain and manage workload:
  1. Responsible for maintaining patient statistics and patient workload.
  1. Plan and provide coverage in unit where necessary.
  1. Provide service coverage where necessary.
Safe Care
  1. Contribute to maintenance and improvement of safe care:
  1. Practice due diligence during all patient interactions to ensure safety of the patient at all times.
  1. Undertake corrective actions immediately and consistently when feedback given.
  1. May assist department in implementing safety improvement program where applicable.
Education
Supervision and Mentoring
  1. Coach/ Supervise/ Training of staff (Intra-department staff and/ or AH12 and below optometrist).
  1. May conduct clinical orientation for new staff.
  1. May supervise final year students, provide timely feedback, clinical teaching and perform competency assessments as required.
Delivering of Education
  1. Conduct training and education to intra/ inter-department staff and/ or external events.
  1. May conduct professional workshops and seminars to patients and public.
Planning and Development
  1. May plan, organise, coordinate and provide continuing education program and public education events.
  1. May assist to design, develop, review and update training resource materials and assessment tools.
Research and Quality
Update Practice and Quality Knowledge
  1. Apply and demonstrate evidence-based practice.
  1. May assist in quality improvement activities/ projects.
Involve in Research and Quality
  1. May participate in and support clinical projects in data collection/ design/ analysis.
  1. Participate actively in quality improvement activities at hospital/ department level.
Create and Communicate Evidence
  1. May assist to develop abstracts/ posters/ oral presentations.
Management/ Leadership
Managing Services and Resources
  1. Assist to manage services and resources to achieve department/ hospital targets.
Collaboration and Communication
  1. May assist in leading department workgroup to deliver and improve service and care.
  1. May participate in department projects.
Setting Strategic Direction
  1. May assist to manage information and data to identify gaps and potential areas of change.
General (10%)
  1. Actively involved in hospital and department’s initiatives.
  1. Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
  1. Administrative duties as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education / Training / Experience

Minimum Diploma in Optometry.

Minimum 5 years of experience in Optometry.

Courses in relevant clinical disciplines is preferred.

Professional License

Registered with OOB, Singapore with Full or Provisional License.

Attained valid Practicing License from OOB, Singapore.
