Research Fellow: Sodium-Ion Batteries for Grid Services

Job summary

The Meng Research Group at NTU invites applications for a Research Fellow to investigate how sodium-ion batteries can be engineered to deliver grid ancillary services in Singapore, as the first step toward a sodium-ion virtual power plant.

You will characterize electrochemical and thermal behavior, develop degradation-aware control and bidding strategies, and validate models on NTU’s test facilities, collaborating with researchers, engineers, and software developers.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• Research experience in battery materials, electrochemistry, or materials synthesis.
• Experience with robotic systems, high-throughput experimentation, or autonomous laboratory development.
• Demonstrated scientific productivity (peer-reviewed publications).
• Strong hands-on experimental and problem-solving skills with automated workflows.
• Good communication and teamwork in multidisciplinary environments.

Responsibilities

• Support deployable grid assets for Singapore, starting with a BESS for ancillary services.
• Conduct automated materials synthesis, characterization, electrochemical testing, and data analysis.
• Participate in project planning, data collection and analysis to ensure reproducible research outcomes.
• Prepare manuscripts for publication and contribute to grant proposals and reports.
• Report progress in group and individual meetings.
• Contribute to technology development and translational opportunities.
