Job summary

Kongsberg Maritime, a global leader in marine technology, seeks an experienced Principal Instrument Engineer to lead the Instrumentation discipline on offshore projects. You will guide complex technical challenges, ensure safe and reliable solutions, and coordinate across multidiscipline teams throughout the project lifecycle.

You will act as the primary technical interface with clients, authorities, and vendors, and mentor engineering staff while supporting recruitment and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's in Instrumentation, Electronics, Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 15+ years in instrumentation & control engineering for offshore oil & gas projects.
  • Lead engineer or discipline authority on EPC/EPCI projects with relevant standards.
  • Experience with ICSS integration and offshore project execution.

  • Provide technical leadership as SME for Instrumentation discipline on offshore projects.
  • Lead instrumentation activities for FPSOs and offshore platforms, including design reviews.
  • Develop and govern engineering standards, specs, and best practices.
  • Interface with clients, certifying authorities, EPC contractors, and vendors.

Job description

The Principal Instrument Engineer is the technical lead and subject matter expert (SME) for the Instrumentation Engineering discipline. The role provides technical leadership on complex offshore projects, like FPSOs and offshore production facilities, ensuring safe, reliable, and fit-for-purpose engineering solutions throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Technical Leadership
    • Serve as the department's technical lead and SME for Instrumentation discipline.
    • Provide guidance and solutions for complex technical challenges across multiple projects.
    • Develop, maintain, and govern engineering standards, specifications, and best practices.
    • Review and approve critical engineering deliverables and technical decisions.
  • Project Execution
    • Lead instrumentation engineering activities for offshore projects, including FPSOs, floating facilities, offshore platforms, and brownfield modifications.
    • Carry out proper planning and execution of integration/engineering work as well as technical quality checks throughout project execution
    • Ensure preparation, review and delivery of documents such as cable block diagrams, termination and loop diagrams, instrument index, I/O list, control and safety philosophy, detector layout and cause & effect charts, instrument loop diagrams, control system architecture and SIL verification studies
    • Oversee the design and integration of ICSS systems.
    • Support HAZOP, SIL, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup activities.
    • Ensure compliance with project, client, regulatory, and classification society requirements.
    • Manage technical interfaces with multidiscipline engineering teams and close collaboration with the ICSS team to ensure successful execution of projects.
  • Act as the primary technical interface with clients, certifying authorities, EPC contractors, and equipment vendors.
  • Lead technical bid evaluations, vendor reviews, and package integration activities.
  • Capability Development
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff to strengthen discipline capability and technical excellence.
  • Support recruitment, competency development, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in Instrumentation, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 15 years of instrumentation & control engineering experience in offshore Oil & Gas, FPSOs, floating production facilities, offshore platforms, and brownfield projects.
  • Demonstrated experience as lead engineer, discipline lead, or technical authority on large EPC/EPCI projects, with good working knowledge of relevant industry standards (like IEC / API / ISO / NORSOK), class and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong experience across concepts, FEED, detailed design, commissioning and operations support phases.
  • Proven track record in managing complex multidisciplinary technical challenges.
  • Prior experience on Kongsberg Maritime ICSS system will have an added advantage.
