An established general insurer is looking for an experienced Underwriting Manager to join its Singapore business.
This is a broad-based role combining technical underwriting, portfolio oversight and product development. The successful candidate will work closely with distribution, product and other internal stakeholders to strengthen underwriting performance, enhance existing propositions and support the development of new insurance solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical underwriting guidance across Personal and Commercial Lines.
- Assess and provide recommendations on complex or non-standard underwriting cases.
- Monitor portfolio performance and identify emerging risks, trends and areas requiring corrective action.
- Support profitable portfolio growth through appropriate risk selection, pricing and underwriting discipline.
- Review underwriting guidelines, policy terms, coverage conditions and documentation to ensure they remain commercially relevant and technically sound.
- Monitor portfolio exposure and accumulation across key classes of business.
- Perform periodic reviews of underwriting quality and recommend improvements where required.
- Analyse underwriting and portfolio data to provide insights into business performance and risk trends.
- Keep abreast of market developments, competitor activity, product offerings and pricing movements within the Singapore general insurance market.
Product & Proposition Development
- Support the development and enhancement of General Insurance products across different customer and distribution segments.
- Work with business stakeholders to identify opportunities for new products, coverage enhancements and proposition improvements.
- Conduct market and competitor research to assess product positioning, coverage and pricing.
- Manage product initiatives from initial concept and feasibility assessment through development, approval and launch.
- Review the performance of existing products and recommend changes based on portfolio results, customer needs and market developments.
- Partner with distribution and business teams to ensure products are commercially competitive while maintaining appropriate underwriting standards.
Stakeholder & Governance
- Act as a technical underwriting partner to distribution and business teams.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders across underwriting, claims, actuarial, product, operations and compliance.
- Ensure underwriting and product activities are conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and internal risk frameworks.
- Contribute to continuous improvements in underwriting processes, controls and overall portfolio management.
What We're Looking For
- Relevant experience within General Insurance underwriting, ideally with exposure across multiple product lines.
- Strong technical understanding of underwriting principles, risk assessment and portfolio management.
- Experience within Personal Lines and/or Commercial Lines.
- Exposure to product development or product management within General Insurance would be advantageous.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret portfolio performance and underwriting data.
- Confident stakeholder management skills and the ability to provide technical guidance to both underwriting and distribution teams.
- Commercially minded, with the ability to balance growth opportunities against underwriting profitability and risk.
