The role includes routine sample processing, hematology, coagulation, and blood bank testing, along with quality control, instrument maintenance, and record keeping. Strong analytical skills and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of test procedures with minimal supervision.
• Process routine samples including spinning and aliquoting.
• Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses on blood, CSF, urine, stool and other fluids.
• Carry out haematology procedures: microscopy, bone marrow assistance, staining, and stem cells thawing.
• Support coagulation testing and blood transfusion services.
• Handle registration, inquiries, results printing, and record keeping.
• Ensure safety regulations and maintain inventory of consumables and reagents.
• Review QC results and report issues to senior staff.
• Maintain instrument checks and report non-functional equipment.
• Participate in CAP proficiency testing and quality assurance programs.
• Engage in routine instrument maintenance and ongoing professional development.
• Support flexible staffing and participate in shift duties.

Job description

Key accountabilities

• Responsible to perform, depending on the section posted, a variety of test procedures according to the standards set in the Laboratory with little direct supervision by a senior staff
• Routine sample processing such as spinning and aliquoting of patient samples.
• Routine qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses on blood, CSF (cerebrospinal fluid), urine, stool and other body fluids.
• Routine haematology procedures including, microscopy (blood film, microfilaria, malaria parasite, reticulocytes), bone marrow assistance, slide staining and stem cells thawing.
• Coagulation testing
• Blood transfusion services (crossmatching, blood typing, antibody screening, unit typing, stock management and transfusion reaction investigation).
• Administrative section - responsible to perform registration of patient samples, handling telephone inquiries by clients and printing and faxing of patient results. Result retrieval and record/specimen keeping.
• Complies and maintains all applicable safety regulations in the Laboratory.
• Maintains proper inventory levels of all Clinical Laboratory consumables and reagents
• Reviews all daily QC results and discuss any problems with senior staff.
• Checks the performance of all instruments and equipment in the Laboratory and to report any equipment which is not functioning properly.
• Complies with all regulatory guidelines, participating in CAP proficiency testing programs and in hospital quality assurance programs.
• Participates in a routine maintenance program for instruments and in on-going continuing education and professional development programs.
• Supports flexible staffing requirements in the department and participates in shift duties.
• Any other duties as assigned from time to time by clinical supervisor.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field
• 1-2 years of experience in haematology and blood bank testing (optional)
• Some knowledge of haematology and blood bank principles, practices, and procedures
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
