Job summary

Evam builds mission-critical backend systems for public safety. As a Senior Backend Developer, you’ll own design and implementation for incident coordination using Kotlin, Spring Boot, MongoDB, and Kubernetes.

This role emphasizes reliability, observability, and safe changes, with AI-assisted development as a core daily practice. You’ll help set engineering standards and shape the backend across the team.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend software engineering with Kotlin and Spring Boot, with senior-level design ownership.
• Strong experience with MongoDB, including production-ready data models.
• Hands-on Kubernetes experience, containerised deployment and scaling (Azure AKS a plus).
• Solid CI/CD practices and testing at unit and integration levels.
• Experience with performance, load, resilience, and observability in distributed systems.
• AI literacy and daily use of AI assistants in design, debugging, and reviews.
• Excellent English communication; able to write proposals and explain risk.
• Proactive ownership mindset and user-focused approach.

Job description

Evam builds mission-critical technology for the people who keep society safe. Our software is used by police, ambulance, fire & rescue, and other public safety organisations to manage complex, time-critical operations. Every day, Evam supports first responders handling hundreds of thousands of life-threatening incidents.

As a Senior Backend Developer, you'll build the systems that behave correctly when it matters most: when a dispatcher is coordinating an ongoing incident, or when a paramedic is en route to a scene. You'll work across our backend platform, built on Spring Boot 4 and Kotlin, backed by MongoDB, and deployed on Kubernetes (Azure AKS). From service architecture and data modelling, to reliability under load, to production operations, you'll own the technical decisions that keep the platform fast and correct.

We're looking for someone who treats reliability and correctness as core engineering properties, not an afterthought. You'll partner closely with the rest of the team by reviewing code, pairing on tricky design problems, and shaping how services are built for observability, testability, and safe change. You'll help define what good architecture looks like for a mission-critical system, build the tooling to get there, and challenge the team (kindly but firmly) when something isn't ready to ship.

This is a deeply technical role with real autonomy. You're not just implementing tickets — you're setting the engineering bar for the backend across the team.

Need to have

• 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience with Kotlin and Spring Boot, with senior-level depth in system design, code quality, and technical ownership
• Strong experience with MongoDB, including designing data models that hold up under production load
• Hands-on experience running services in Kubernetes, with a solid grasp of containerised deployment, scaling, and operating production workloads (Azure AKS experience is a plus)
• Solid grasp of CI/CD pipelines, testing practices at the unit and integration level, and how to keep services fast, stable, and safe to change
• Experience with non-functional concerns where relevant: performance, load, resilience, and observability (logging, metrics, tracing) in distributed systems
• AI literacy is a must — you actively use AI assistants (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, or similar) in your daily workflow and can show how they change how you design systems, investigate issues, and review code
• Excellent communication in English, both written and verbal — you can write a clear design proposal, push back constructively in a review, and explain technical risk to non-engineers
• A proactive, ownership-driven mindset and genuine care for what the user experiences

Nice to have

• Experience in regulated, safety-critical, or high-availability domains
• Experience defining backend architecture or technical strategy across multiple teams or services
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure) beyond Azure, and modern observability tooling
• Experience introducing AI-assisted development practices at a team or org level
