The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) is driving an unprecedented demand for large-scale AI data centers, creating new challenges for power supply, energy efficiency, resilience, and grid integration. At the same time, Arctic and sub‑Arctic regions are becoming attractive locations for AI data centers due to their naturally cold climates, which significantly reduce cooling requirements. These trends call for next-generation microgrids and power electronic technologies to ensure reliable and sustainable operation.
This project focuses on the design, modeling, control, and management of microgrids for AI data centers. The project is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency in close collaboration with Arjeplog Municipality, providing a unique real-world Arctic test environment.
