Job summary

Permobil in Sundsvall invites applications for an Industrial PhD Student position in applied AI. You will work with large operational and product data to create value for operations, products and users, combining academic research with real industrial impact.

You will be employed by Permobil and admitted to Mid Sweden University's doctoral program. The role includes close supervision, international collaboration and the chance to publish in journals and conferences.

Qualifications

• Eligibility: degree at advanced level or 240 credits with at least 60 credits at advanced level.
• At least 90 credits in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or closely related subjects.
• Good command of English, Swedish is an advantage.
• Experience in machine learning, data analysis or industrial AI applications is an advantage.
• Comfortable working in an international company and in a cross-functional context.

About the role

Permobil is now establishing an industrial PhD position in artificial intelligence, in close collaboration with Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitetet). The position is part of a four-year research project and gives you the chance to do doctoral research with one foot in academia and one foot in a real industrial environment.

As Industrial PhD Student, you will be employed by Permobil in Sundsvall and admitted to the doctoral program at Mid Sweden University. You will work with the large amounts of operational and product data that our organization generates every day, and build deep knowledge about how AI can create value from it for our operations, our products and the people who use them.

The research problem is deliberately open. Rather than a narrowly defined task, you get room to explore, ask deeper questions and shape the research direction together with your academic supervisors and your colleagues at Permobil.

Key responsibilities:

• Plan and carry out doctoral research in applied AI, and complete your doctoral studies and thesis within the project period,
• Define and refine the research questions together with your supervisors as the project evolves,
• Work with real operational and product data from Permobil and turn it into new knowledge,
• Develop, test and evaluate AI methods, and show how they perform in a real industrial setting,
• Take part in doctoral courses and in the research environment at Mid Sweden University,
• Publish and present your results at conferences and in journals, in dialogue with Permobil and in line with the project agreement,
• Share insights and build competence with colleagues in Operations, R&D, Clinical and other functions at the site.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Basic eligibility for doctoral studies: a degree at advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level, or equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad,
• Specific eligibility: at least 90 credits in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or closely related subjects,
• Good command of English, spoken and written. Swedish is an advantage,
• Experience in machine learning, data analysis or industrial applications of AI is an advantage, but not a requirement,
• Comfortable working in an international company and in a cross-functional context.
