Job summary

Einride AB is seeking a Safety Manager to lead safety for autonomous freight operations. This role involves improving the Safety Management System, establishing safety governance, and partnering with engineering teams to define safety requirements.

Ideal candidates will have over 15 years of experience in safety-critical industries and significant expertise in safety standards relevant to autonomous vehicles. This is a full-time position based in Stockholm, Gothenburg, or the U.S., requiring considerable travel.

Founded in 2016, Einride became the world’s first company to deploy a cab‑less autonomous electric vehicle on a public road (Sweden, 2019). In 2022 we successfully operated such a vehicle on a U.S. public road, and today our award‑winning technology operates across eight countries.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, implementation, and continual improvement of the Safety Management System (SMS), aligned with global best practices used in aviation, automotive, and other safety‑critical industries. This includes defining safety policies and objectives, risk management, safety assurance, safety promotion and safety culture.
• Own the end‑to‑end safety case for autonomous operations, aligned with global standards such as UL 4600, ISO 5083 and relevant current and emerging regulations in UNECE markets, the U.S., and GCC markets.
• Establish internal and external safety governance structures, including review boards, supporting processes, and escalation pathways to ensure consistent decision‑making across all markets.
• Partner with hardware, software and system engineering teams to define high‑level safety requirements across the ADS stack, vehicle platform, remote operations, cloud systems, AI/ML components, and operating environments.
• Oversee the software release safety assessment process to independently validate and confirm readiness of each release, ensuring an acceptable level of risk is achieved and key assets and evidences conform to technical standards including ISO 26262, ISO 21448, ISO 21434, ISO 8800 and more.
• Ensure that safety‑relevant architecture, redundancy concepts, ODD definitions, and fallback strategies are robust, auditable, and ready for regulatory review.
• Define operational procedures, operator requirements, training and certification programs, and safety monitoring functions.
• Oversee safety incident response program, field issue analysis and escalation, and continuous fleet operational monitoring to deliver improvement through deployment.
• Scope, plan, and direct the execution of safety audits and third‑party assessments in service of unlocking new permits, markets and customer deployments.

Qualifications

• 15+ years experience in a highly‑regulated, safety‑critical industry (automotive, aviation, aerospace, robotics, nuclear, rail, or similar).
• 10+ years of experience in automated systems or autonomous vehicles, including hands‑on leadership in engineering development.
• Deep expertise in safety management systems, with a proven track record of implementing or operating SMS structures at scale.
• Direct experience operating or supporting large, complex, distributed fleets in real‑world environments.
• Highly proficient with ISO 26262, ISO 21448, ISO 8800, ISO 5083, UL 4600, and other AV‑specific safety standards and methods.
• Familiar with global regulatory frameworks, including UNECE R155 & R156, and U.S. FMVSS implications for ADS deployments.
• A proven track record of leading high‑performing global teams, ideally across engineering and operations.
