JOB PURPOSE / OBJECTIVE
The Welding Superintendent – Piping is responsible for managing all piping welding activities within assigned projects for the piping department, ensuring safe, timely, and quality execution of welding operations on rigs, vessels, and yard-based repairs. Supervises all welding activities in the workshop and/or onboard and ensures that related works are carried out safely, on time and in accordance with customers satisfaction and International Maritime Industries Management System (IMIMS). The role requires hands-on technical leadership and proactive planning to meet project deadlines, quality standards, and class requirements. The role involves working closely with the Senior Welding Superintendent, Piping Superintendents, Welding and Piping Supervisors, Project Managers, QC, Welding Engineers, Safety and Gas Inspectors, Subcontractors, production teams or other internal departments as required to ensure that all assigned onboard and workshop scopes are executed as described above. The Superintendent ensures production line efficiency and proper housekeeping onboard and, when required, prepares budgets and cost estimates for production/projects. A proactive solution-oriented mindset, aiming for the right first-time delivery, is essential for this role. A vital part of the job is to continually advance the Piping division, positioning it as a leading area within the yard with a global reputation.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Adhere to, reinforce, and promote IMI Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Policies. Lead and supervise Welding Supervisors, Foremen, Charge hands, Welders and Subcontractors, ensuring optimal team performance and task prioritization.
- Attend the daily departmental meetings to update the Piping Manager regarding the projects progress status and any serious matters in terms of equipment & tools, consumables, and lack of resources preventing the welding section from achieving the projects deadline. Receive and follow the instructions from the Piping Manager regarding priority of the projects and their critical paths by allocating the workforce accordingly.
- Hold daily meetings with the welding Supervisors to ensure that the welders work on the right priorities, check the physical progress of the work, provide technical advice.
- Develop comprehensive project/production plans, including detailed schedules, and resources allocation.
- Provide sound and good knowledge on various types of welding works on vessels and rigs.
- Ensure all repair and maintenance work is carried out in accordance with the approved procedures WPS, projects specifications, and the proper welding sequences by meeting the required quality standards and regulatory requirements.
- Lead and manage welding supervisors, foremen, charge-hands, welders including subcontractors. Ensure, in conjunction with the Procurement-Supply Chain Group, that all materials and equipment are procured and delivered in accordance with the production and projects contract requirements.
- Ensure effective and consistent interaction with other production superintendents as required.
- Monitor actual man-hours against budgeted man-hours and take appropriate steps to correct overruns. Control the overtime to contribute to the best projects and gross margins. Ensure that the welding supervisors book the correct hours/timesheets for the right project orders and job numbers for a proper project cost capturing and cost control.
- Check and monitor the welding consumable waste and introduce the weld maps for quality control and statistical records and defects analysis regarding performance of welders.
- Ensure availability of all necessary welding equipment, tools, as well as the special welding consumables to be in good working condition and being calibrated without exceeding the expiry date.
- Facilitate training and development of welders, conduct a trade test whenever it is necessary.
- Liaise with the engineering department regarding qualifying and certifying the trainee welders by the class. Liaise with other trades to ensure project schedule adherence.
- Accountable for delivery of all Inspection Test Records (ITR’s) under the relevant discipline by effectively delegating them to the team.
- Visit regularly project work whether in workshops, onboard, in docks, other open areas where welding activities are taking place to check on progress and give technical advice and guidance. Ensure all control measures are in place for safety, environmental aspects and housekeeping.
- Perform other relevant tasks as requested by line management.
Education
Bachelor's degree in engineering (preferably Mechanical/Piping/Marine) or extensive relevant experience with diploma.
Experience
At least 12 years’ MRO shipyard experience (degree) or 17 years (diploma), with substantial exposure to Piping welding operations and team leadership in ship repair, oil & gas, or similar environments.
