Aramco energizes the world economy.
We are seeking a Protection & Control Engineer to join the Technical Services Division. The Technical Services Division provides and manages highly technical engineering services to support safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Saudi Aramco's electrical transmission and distribution networks. The Division ensures asset integrity, personnel safety, and continuity of power supply through power system protection, control, and advanced system studies.
Overview
Your primary role is to provide specialized technical support services related to protection system design, relay settings, system modeling, and power system studies. The role also includes ownership and governance of power system models, supporting standardization, data integrity, and continuous improvement across projects and operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct protection relay settings calculations, coordination reviews, and verification for transmission, distribution, and industrial power systems.
- Lead or support power system disturbance and interruption investigations, including relay event analysis, fault reconstruction, and root cause analysis.
- Provide technical review for protection philosophies, relay settings files, system study reports, and engineering deliverables.
- Review, support development, and update company standards, guidelines, and procedures related to protection, control, and power system studies.
- Perform and validate load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, and transient stability studies using Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP).
- Perform arc flash hazard analyses and support mitigation strategies in accordance with IEEE, NFPA, and Saudi Aramco standards.
- Conduct transient and electromagnetic studies (e.g., switching transients, motor starting, system response) using ETAP and PSCAD.
- Support commissioning, site testing, troubleshooting, and post-event analysis of protection and control systems.
- Develop, maintain, and govern ETAP power system models, ensuring accuracy, consistency, version control, and alignment across projects, operations, and studies.
- Provide technical consultation to operations and maintenance teams to enhance system reliability, selectivity, and resilience.
- Support digitalization and continuous improvement initiatives related to protection systems, power system modeling, analytics, and engineering workflows.
- Interface with vendors, consultants, and contractors to ensure compliance with Saudi Aramco Engineering Standards and international codes.
- Represent the organization in industry forums, technical committees, and professional working groups related to power system protection and analysis.
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, presentations, and knowledge-sharing materials.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring where required.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university; advanced degree a plus.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in power system protection and control, with direct involvement in system studies, relay settings, and operational investigations within oil & gas, utilities, industrial facilities, or equipment manufacturers.
- Background in protection of transformers, motors, transmission lines, and distribution systems.
- Advanced proficiency in ETAP, including model governance and execution of load flow, short-circuit, rotation coordination, arc flash analysis, and transient & dynamic studies.
- Practical experience using PSCAD for electromagnetic transient (EMT) and complex system behavior analysis.
- Knowledge of ANSI and IEC protection philosophies, relay technologies, and control schemes.
- Familiarity with IEEE, IEC, NFPA, and Saudi Aramco Engineering Standards (SAES).
- Capability in power system event analysis, fault investigations, and root cause analysis.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
