Job Description

Job Purpose:

The Engineer works within the Regional Engineering team, reporting to the Engineering or Technical Manager. Guided by Senior Engineers where appropriate, they take responsibility for day‑to‑day technical support to the region. This includes product selection and specification, troubleshooting, failure diagnosis and involves working directly with internal and sometimes external customers, supported by Sales and Aftermarket as appropriate.

Support to Sales and Service:

Across all products, as needed locally, provide application support for engineering orders and proposals, typically those designated as Level 1 or 2 in IS‑123. Where necessary (e.g., Level 3) consult specialists within other Engineering Solutions teams. Record activity through iProjects and ensure timely response to internal customers. Support sales personnel with technical presentations for targeted opportunities, improving customer relationships and winning business. Provide engineering support for troubleshooting, commissioning issues, escalating support as necessary and working with Central Expertise as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing & processing application engineering and project requests
  • Following standard techniques and procedures, selection / application of products to meet customers' needs, including seals, fluid control products, couplings and filters.
  • Generation of engineering proposals / specifications for products, including determining cost‑effective materials for production Calculations (including seal leakage, heat generation, balance temp, flow rates etc. and calculations for couplings, support systems and filtration)
  • Good understanding and use of CSTEDY & similar tools for in‑depth design analysis, including review of basic CSTEDY reports
  • Produce complete and informative drawing office requests and provide applications guidance to designers to complete layout (GA) and detail drawings
  • Use CAD to create proposal drawings, and to aid liaison with drawing offices
  • Field troubleshooting, including analysis of problems / recommendation & implementation of appropriate solutions, meeting with customers (together with Sales and Service) in plant or at customer’s site to resolve satisfactorily
  • Detailed failure analysis activities, including investigation / reporting / resolution with customer with necessary commercial awareness.
  • Approve / reject purchased or manufactured and fabricated parts not to drawing specification- (Salesforce Notification)
  • Detailed technical presentations to customers to support sales
  • Manage and report personal workload, forecast job lead‑times to meet customer and departmental objectives
  • Raise / process / approve Global Change Notice (GCN) requests
  • Provide day‑to‑day technical support to Regional Sales, Commercial Support and Service teams
  • Work closely with Sales team and report any retrofit or upgrade opportunity
  • Work in line with John Crane standards, procedures, and policies
Qualifications

Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Degree qualified Engineer, BEng, MEng or equivalent, perhaps with ongoing application for professional membership / chartership – e.g. MIMechE, CEng or equivalent. Computer literate in MS Office, MS Outlook, and Knowledge and understanding of 3D CAD. Commercial awareness: Understanding of how their design and selection decisions impact profitability. Ability to carry out failure analysis and knowledge of root cause analysis and associated processes. Typically, at least 4 to 5 years’ relevant experience in an application role, with extensive relevant product / equipment / industry knowledge.
