The Data Center Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of mechanical and HVAC systems within the data center. This includes ensuring optimal cooling performance, environmental control, and energy efficiency to maintain uptime and reliability. The role involves supervising mechanical and HVAC technicians, enforcing safety standards, and supporting the Facility Manager in achieving operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical & HVAC System Management
- Oversee operation and maintenance of chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, cooling towers, pumps, and piping systems.
- Monitor temperature, humidity, and airflow to ensure compliance with ASHRAE standards and data center requirements.
- Optimize cooling efficiency and manage capacity planning.
- Lead and supervise mechanical and HVAC technicians in daily operations and maintenance tasks.
- Assign work orders, monitor progress, and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
- Provide technical guidance and training to technicians.
- Preventive & Corrective Maintenance
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for mechanical and HVAC equipment.
- Respond to mechanical faults and coordinate corrective actions promptly.
- Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with local mechanical codes, ASHRAE guidelines, and company policies.
- Conduct safety audits and enforce lockout/tagout procedures.
- Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare detailed reports on mechanical system performance, incidents, and maintenance activities.
- Maintain accurate documentation of mechanical drawings, airflow calculations, and test results.
- Provide monthly and quarterly reports to the Facility Manager on HVAC infrastructure status and improvement plans.
- Project Support
- Assist in mechanical design and commissioning for data center expansions or upgrades.
- Coordinate with vendors for equipment procurement and installation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in mechanical/HVAC systems within data centers or critical facilities.
- Strong knowledge of cooling systems, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, and airflow management.
- Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) and HVAC control systems.
- Certifications such as CDCP, HVAC Professional, or equivalent are preferred.
