About the Role

We’re looking for a proactive senior software developer with several years of experience who can help us build the best publication experience in the world. We are looking for skilled and passionate software developers to help us build the best products that enable the research community to advance the progress and understanding of science. In this role you will be helping to build our next generation peer review system. We work closely with our editorial teams both in London and India, have focus groups with external editorial board members and report to a senior level programme board. It’s a high‑profile programme of work and we are constantly working to evolve our content and business models; keeping us competitive in a rapidly changing digital landscape. You will be joining a cross functional team with different nationalities, backgrounds and experience levels. All team members collaborate to deliver solutions that best satisfy the needs of researchers. We value engineering excellence, and believe quality is what helps us go fast. You will work on a system which has dozens of impactful deployments to production every working day. The job is based in our Lisbon location, and you will be working with team members based in London and Lisbon. We offer a mixed remote/office working with up to three days per week working from home. Role Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable web applications using Kotlin, JavaScript, and related technologies across the full technology stack.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑quality software solutions and drive collective ownership of product outcomes.
  • Contribute to all phases of the software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and design through development, deployment, and ongoing support.
  • Champion engineering best practices, including Test‑Driven Development (TDD), to ensure high‑quality, reliable, and maintainable code.
  • Participate in pair programming, code reviews, and collaborative development activities to promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Support and mentor junior and less experienced developers, fostering technical growth and a culture of learning within the team.
  • Practice and advocate Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) to enable efficient and reliable software releases.
  • Take ownership of applications in production, proactively monitoring performance, resolving issues, and driving continuous improvement based on operational insights.
  • Contribute to a culture of experimentation, learning from failures, and applying lessons learned to improve products and engineering practices.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by fostering an inclusive team environment and supporting initiatives that strengthen belonging and representation across the organization.
Other responsibilities include:
  • Take part in our daily stand‑ups.
  • Contribute to ceremonies like planning, story writing, collaborative design and retrospectives.
  • Develop new features and improve code quality by pair programming with other team members, as well as working independently.
  • Take part in support and monitoring of our websites.
What you will be doing
Within 3 Months you will:
  • Get familiar with our technology stack. All our new applications are built in Kotlin using http4k. Our applications are deployed to CloudFoundry using Concourse.
  • Make a real impact for our users, by improving our peer review system with new features and improvements.
  • Get familiar with, and take part in, the team’s agile processes and ceremonies.
  • Triage support queries and diagnose issues in the live applications.
By 3‑6 months you will:
  • Be a supportive member of the team, understanding our end‑to‑end, developing our infrastructure, including non‑functional requirements, and working closely with our technology and Production partners.
  • Understand the team’s context within the publishing business they are working in.
  • Lead technical discussions with the team to improve the product architecture and code quality.
  • Be able to understand and discuss business requirements with stakeholders and Product Owners.
  • Contribute to blameless post‑mortems.
  • Take part in the recruiting process, helping to assess applicants across SN Digital.
  • Coach junior members of the team.
By 6‑12 months you will:
  • Onboard new members to the team or help other teams on the onboarding process.
  • Transform high‑level requirements into actionable work.
  • Proactively provide useful and actionable feedback to team members.
  • Become an advocate for defining and implementing non‑functional requirements.
  • Influence the design of the system architecture.
  • Be able to explain and visualise the benefits and trade‑offs of proposed solutions.
  • Understand our customers’ needs, both internal and external, and how your work affects their experience.
