Job summary

The Open Home Foundation is seeking a Senior Python developer, based in Europe, to join our Home Assistant department as a full-time Software Engineer. You will help bring Home Assistant to the next level of AI capabilities, building foundations for AI features, assistant workflows, and agent-like tooling, while collaborating with the open-source community.

You will design APIs, implement in-product agents, and connect our platform to the wider agentic world, keeping the system private,

Qualifications

• 5+ years of Python backend development.
• 3+ years with asyncio and threading.
• Built and shipped LLM-powered features in production Python: tool calling, agent loops, streaming, evaluation.
• Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers or clients.
• Experience with local, on-device inference (Ollama, llama.cpp).
• Strong problem-solving abilities and ability to work independently.
• Fluent English communication and collaboration in a remote setup.
• European residency and eligibility to work in Europe.

Responsibilities

• Design and build the AI foundation of Home Assistant: conversation APIs, LLM integrations, and typed tool layers.
• Create in-product agents grounded in home configuration with user control.
• Connect Home Assistant to the agentic world via MCP and open standards.
• Grow Assist from home control to home management with memory and documentation features.
• Make AI features easy to discover, set up, and disable.
• Build AI-powered workflows for community tasks like triage and contributor tooling.
• Conduct code reviews of PRs and maintain high coding standards.
• Collaborate with the community to address issues and propose architecture.
• Provide input on architectural proposals and codebase changes.
