Main research field:

Chemistry or Biochemistry

Admission requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related fields, and enrollment in a Master’s program in the relevant scientific area of the call or registration/enrollment in a non-degree course offered by a higher education institution in collaboration with an R&D unit in the field of Chemistry or Biochemistry.
  • Previous experience in the proteomic analysis of biological samples and in the characterization of protein post-translational modifications by mass spectrometry.

In case the BSc degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16th August, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the signature of Fellowship contract.

Working plan:

The project aims to implement proteomics methodologies for the characterization of modifications in proteins obtained from various biological samples. The selected candidate’s primary laboratory task will be to conduct proteomics analyses and characterize post-translational modifications in proteins. The analysis of other biomolecules will also be carried out. The laboratory work will involve operating high-resolution mass spectrometers.

Work Place:

The work will be carried out at the LAQV laboratories at the University of Porto under the scientific supervision of Dr. André Silva.

Duration:

The fellowship will have duration of 6 months, possibly renewable for equal periods, starting on November of 2026.

Preference will be given to students enrolled in the second year of a Master's degree programme who are currently developing their Master's dissertation.

  • I. Average of final Bachelor's Degree Classification - 20%
  • II. Evaluation of the Candidate’s Academic Background:
  • IIa. Experience in chromatographic methods for protein separation – 15%
  • IIb. Experience in the analysis and characterization of protein post-translational modifications by mass spectrometry – 10%
  • IIc. Experience in the proteomic analysis of biological samples, including bioinformatic data analysis – 20%
  • IId. Experience in the use of high-resolution mass spectrometers coupled to nanoHPLC systems – 15%
  • III. Evaluation of the Motivation Letter – 20%

If there are candidates with scores within 10% of the top candidate’s score, the jury will interview the top‑ranked candidate and all candidates within this range. In this case, the interview will weigh 30% of the final global score.
