Zühlke Engineering AG in Porto, Portugal, seeks a software engineer with 2–3 years of Java backend experience to join our international teams.

You will design and implement purpose-built business applications for public sector clients, using Java, Spring Boot or Quarkus, React or Angular, and Kafka, with a DevOps mindset. We offer flexible work, opportunities for training, and travel to client sites may be required.

Qualificações

• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a comparable field.
• At least 2–3 years of hands-on experience in Java backend development.
• Experience with Spring Boot and/or Quarkus for backend services.
• At least 1 year of professional experience with either React or Angular.
• Experience with Kafka or similar event-driven architectures.
• DevOps mindset with focus on code quality and automated testing.
• Fluent English; willingness to travel to clients in Switzerland and Germany when required.

How you'll make an impact

As part of the team, you'll help design and implement purpose-built business applications for international clients in the public sector. You'll be involved throughout the entire product lifecycle — from turning an initial idea into a solution through development and going live.

What is important to us

• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a comparable field.
• At least 2–3 years of practical, hands‑on experience in Java and backend software development.
• Experience with Spring Boot and/or Quarkus for building backend applications and services.
• At least 1 year of professional experience with either React or Angular.
• Experience with Kafka or other event‑driven/message‑based architectures is highly valued.
• A DevOps mindset, with an understanding of high code quality, automated testing and modern software engineering practices.
• You are eager to learn and motivated by achieving ambitious goals as part of a team. You enjoy working directly with customers and contributing to both technical and business discussions.
• You speak fluent English.
• You are willing to travel to clients in countries such as Switzerland and Germany when required.

Nice to have

• Experience with technologies and tools such as Playwright, Azure, Helm, Terraform and GitHub Actions/workflows.
• Experience designing or working with distributed systems, microservices or event‑driven architectures.
• Experience working with AI‑assisted development tools or agents such as GitHub Copilot, Claude or similar technologies.
