Offer Description

A tender is hereby opened for the award of 1 (one) Research Grant (RG)under the project “CiPoCer – Circularidade de resíduos poliméricos do setor cerâmico”, CENTRO2030-FEDER-01169500, N.º: 17247, of CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area:Environmental Engineering or related areas.

2. Financing Source: Funding from Compete 2030, by Portugal 2030, and European Union.

3. Admission Requirements:

- Master's degree in Environmental Engineering, with a final grade equal to or above 14 points, enrollment in the Doctoral Program in Environmental Sciences and Engineering.

- Experience in research work in biomass or waste pyrolysis technology, sampling and conditioning, and chemical analysis of pyrolysis products.

- Proficiency in spoken and written Portuguese and English. Non-native Portuguese speakers should possess language skills at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Candidates who are not nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries must provide proof of Portuguese language proficiency.

If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th, which approves the legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education, attributed by foreign higher education institutions, and of paragraph e) of no. 2 of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 60/2018, of August 3rd, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring act .

4. Eligibility: Applicants are eligible if they comply with paragraph a) of no.1 of article 2, of the Research Fellow Statute in the wording given by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th, and also the provisions of article 9 of the Scientific Research Grant Regulations of the University of Aveiro.

5. Work plan: The Grant Holder will be involved in the development of theoretical and experimental work related to the valorisation of polymer waste generated during ceramic production. The work to be carried out includes the study of the PMMA waste valorisation process through pyrolysis technology, initially involving the characterization of the pyrolysis process conditions and the products generated, and subsequently the definition and evaluation of suitable operating conditions for continuous and autothermal operation. The aim is to promote the production of recycled monomers, specifically methyl methacrylate (MMA), with high potential for incorporation into the polymerization process of new recycled PMMA products.

6. Applicable legislation and regulations: Research Fellow Statute, as amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28th; Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, Regulation No. 292/2020, published in Diário da República No. 61, Series II, of March 26th; Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions).

7. Workplace: The work will be carried out at CICECO at the Department of Environment and Planning, under scientific guidance of Prof. Doctor Luís António da Cruz Tarelho and Doctor Nuno Vasco da Costa Gama Batista de Melo.

8. Duration of the grant(s): The grant duration will be 6 (six) months, expected to start in September 2025, and may be renewed, up to the maximum limit of approved funding. Under no circumstances shall it exceed the limits defined in nos. 5 and 6 of article 9, of Regulation no. 292/2020, of February 28th, published in Diário da República, no. 61, Series II, of March 26th (Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro).

9. Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to a €1.309,64 according to the table of values of monthly maintenance allowances, set out in Appendix III of the Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro. If the candidate is enrolled in a PhD program, they will also receive a monthly supplement of up to €229.20, the amount of which is set out in Rectoral Order no. 58 -REIT/2022 of the University of Aveiro, to be defined according to the PhD program in which they are enrolled. The amounts are subject to any updates that may occur and are applicable to them. The fellow may also be reimbursed for the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Security, in case of adherence to this plan.

10. Selection methods: The selection method to be used will be Curricular Evaluation, with the option of an interview. The Curricular Evaluation, scored on a scale from 0 to 20 points, will be carried out according to the following criteria and weightings:

- Academic qualifications and Curriculum Vitae in the scientific area of the call (60%);

- Experience in areas considered relevant to the work to be developed (20%);

- Motivation letter highlighting competence and experience related to the work to be carried out (20%).

An Interview may be used as a selection method if the jury does not consider itself sufficiently qualified to make a decision based solely on the Curricular Evaluation. If an Interview is conducted, the final evaluation will be weighted as follows: 60% for the curricular evaluation and 40% for the interview.

The jury reserves the right not to admit candidates to the interview stage if they score below 10 points (on a scale of 0–20 points) in the Curricular Evaluation, and also reserves the right not to award the grant if none of the candidates achieves a minimum final score of 10 points.

12. Deadline for applications and how to submit applications: The call is open from 23/06/2025 to 04/07/2025 ,and only applications submitted within the deadline will be admitted.

Applications must be formally submitted by sending a cover letter accompanied by the following documents: academic degree certificate(s), transcript of records (including course units and respective grades) for the academic degrees, signed and dated Curriculum Vitae, declaration of honour, application form, motivation letter, and any supporting documents deemed relevant. Applicants must also indicate an email address which, by being provided, will be considered as the official means for all notifications related to this procedure.

13. Form of publication/notification of results: The results of the evaluation shall be made public no later than 60 working days after the closing date for submission of applications and shall be notified to the applicants. The candidates are informed, in a prior hearing, under the terms established in the Code of Administrative Procedure, of the probable meaning of the final decision, and may, within 10 working days of this notification, express their opinion on this decision. The final results may appeal to the Rector, to be submitted within 10 working days from the respective notification.

14. Tender duration: The final ranking list of candidates will be valid until August 2025 for the purpose of constituting a reserve list for selection.
