Backend Engineer (Java/Kotlin/Spring Boot) - Hybrid Lisbon (Mostly Remote, Occasional Office)

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Join the technology backbone of a global logistics leader delivering parcels for millions of people across 41 countries and 1,600+ locations worldwide. From routing algorithms to mobile apps, this company's IT organization powers the movement of hundreds of millions of parcels every year - and you'll be part of the engineering team building the systems that make it happen. This is a Mid-Senior to Senior level opportunity, hybrid based in Lisbon, offering real ownership over performance-critical backend services.

PROJECT & CONTEXT

You'll design, build, and maintain server-side applications with a strong focus on performance, scalability, and reliability, working within a cross-functional team to define, design, and ship new features and improvements. The role includes driving best practices in code quality, security, and testing throughout the development lifecycle, troubleshooting and upgrading existing systems proactively, and staying current with emerging technologies to continuously push innovation forward within an Agile environment.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (Required)

• 5+ years of experience as a Backend Engineer or in a similar role within a cross-functional team environment
• Proficiency in Kotlin for backend development
• Solid hands-on experience with Spring Boot and Ktor frameworks
• Solid hands-on experience with SQL and relational databases, including optimization and schema design
• Familiarity with REST API design, microservices architectures, and cloud services (preferably AWS)
• Comfortable working in an Agile development environment
• Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, with a sharp eye for performance tuning
• English proficiency at B2 (Upper Intermediate) level or above, written and verbal, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly

NICE TO HAVE (Preferred)

• Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, SNS/SQS)
• Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
• Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Previous experience in startups or fast-paced environments
• A growth mindset, team-first attitude, and passion for quality, security, and automation

Compensation: €2,000 - €2,650/month net, depending on experience and seniority level.
