The Tech Lead partners closely with the CloudOps Manager, Cloud Service Owners, Cloud Engineers, Security, Networking, and DevOps team to translate operational requirements into robust technical solutions, while continuously reducing operational risk and technical debt. This role does not own people management or budget, but has clear technical decision rights and is a key escalation point for complex incidents and architectural decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Architecture:

  • In collaboration with the Architecture team, define, maintain, and enforce cloud architecture standards, design patterns, and engineering best practices for Cloud Operations.
  • Review and approve technical designs, IaC pull requests, and platform changes impacting production and non‑production environments.
  • Ensure security, resilience, scalability, and observability are built into all cloud solutions by design.

Operational Excellence:

  • Act as technical lead during major incidents, driving deep technical troubleshooting and root cause analysis (RCA).
  • Identify systemic weaknesses and lead permanent corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Support service reliability targets (availability, performance, recoverability).

Automation & Platform Engineering:

  • Lead the design and evolution of Infrastructure‑as‑Code using Terraform, Bicep, or CloudFormation.
  • Drive automation across provisioning, patching, monitoring, backup, disaster recovery, and recovery processes, ensuring repeatable, tested, and reliable DR capabilities across cloud environments.
  • Ensure backups and DR policies, runbooks, and automation meet resilience requirements and are regularly tested and validated.
  • Promote Git‑based workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and policy‑as‑code.

Technical Debt & Modernization:

  • Own and prioritize the technical debt and modernization backlog for Cloud Operations platforms.
  • Proactively reduce operational risk, manual work, and single points of failure.
  • Partner with Cloud Architecture and Security to evolve platforms in line with target state.

Coaching & Capability Development:

  • Mentor Cloud Operations engineers, raising overall technical maturity and engineering discipline.
  • Contribute to skills frameworks, career paths, and technical onboarding content.
  • Act as a role model for ownership, quality, and continuous improvement.

Authority / Decision Rights:

  • Approve or reject technical designs and implementation approaches.
  • Enforce engineering standards, architectural guardrails, and technical best practices.
  • Recommend technology choices, tools, and platform improvements.
  • Escalate unmanaged technical risk to CloudOps Lead and Infrastructure leadership.

Education / Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Microsoft Azure: AZ‑104, AZ‑305 (or equivalent)
  • AWS: Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional)
  • Terraform Associate or equivalent IaC certification
  • ITIL Foundation (or higher)

  • Hybrid working - Flexible number of days per week in the office driven by business requirements as Convatec has a flexible approach to office working.
  • The position follows UK time zone working hours. Standard operating hours are aligned with UK business time (GMT/BST), with occasional flexibility required based on business and operational priorities.
