A fast-growing SaaS company in Portugal is seeking a Backend and Systems Engineer for a full-time remote role. You will be responsible for implementing and maintaining backend services, primarily using Python and FastAPI. The ideal candidate has 3+ years in software engineering, strong backend skills, and experience with cloud platforms. Role Overview

This is a full-time remote role at Primetag. The Backend and Systems Engineer will be responsible for infrastructure, core services, data pipelines, and the observability platform on a day-to-day basis, producing production-grade code with high standards of performance and cost-efficiency, including documentation, testing, and APM metrics.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for a Back-End Engineer who’s ready to contribute at the execution level, with a sharp eye for design, a strong grasp of complex systems, and a proven track record of applying these skills to intensive production systems. But we’re also looking for a well-rounded team member, curious and proactive, who doesn’t take anything for granted, raises concerns constructively, and collaborates effectively with peers.

Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain backend services and APIs (primarily Python/FastAPI and microservices);

Maintain and evolve core microservices, databases, and supporting platform components;

Build, maintain, and improve data ingestion and crawling pipelines;

Help keep the platform scalable, reliable, and maintainable as load and complexity grow;

Contribute to shared platform building blocks, including infrastructure components, internal libraries, and engineering guidelines;

Continuously improve existing systems through refactoring, technical debt reduction, and improved observability;

Debug production issues and contribute to incident resolution when required.

Requirements

3+ years of experience in Software Engineering, with a strong focus on backend development using Python;

Experience building with any API frameworks like Django DRF, Flask, or FastAPI, among others;

Solid understanding of REST API design principles, software design patterns, and clean architecture concepts;

Knowledge and interest in System Design and Software Architecture;

Valuable additional experience:

Experience with any of the major cloud platforms like Azure, AWS or GCP;

Experience working in cloud-based, containerized environments, ideally with Kubernetes in production;

Experience operating or contributing to data-intensive systems (ingestion, processing, storage, or search);

Understanding of observability practices (metrics, logs, tracing) and experience applying them to operate and debug production systems. Familiarity with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog is a plus;

Working knowledge of relational and non-relational databases, with an understanding of performance and scalability trade-offs;

Comfortable with event-oriented architectures and technologies like RabbitMQ or Kafka.

Must be a fiscal resident of Portugal (regardless of nationality)
