A call is open for the allocation of Master Student under Advisor Project ‘Cooperative Autonomous Vehicles for Surveillance Missions’/ ISEP’s Research Group on Software Technologies for Cyber-Physical Systems (SoftCPS), project COMPETE2030-FEDER-01241600 - 17573, co-funded by the Innovation and Digital Transition Thematic Programme (COMPETE2030) through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Portugal 2030, under the following conditions:
Informatics, Computer, Electrical Engineering, or related areas.
If the qualification has been granted by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled until the act of contracting.
Fluency in English is mandatory.
The duration of the grant is 6 months, starting in November 2026, eventually renewable, up to the limit set out in the RBI-ISEP, or until the end of the project, whichever occurs first.
The work plan will address intelligent task offloading and dynamic migration along the edge-cloud continuum for the ADVISOR coastal maritime surveillance use case, involving heterogeneous autonomous vehicles and distributed sensing/compute nodes. Building on the project’s existing co-simulation environment, safety layer and communication QoS monitoring mechanisms, the work will: (i) define an edge-cloud computing hierarchy and task model covering vehicle, near-edge, shore-edge and cloud resources; (ii) design and implement service discovery, task partitioning and orchestration mechanisms supporting configurable placement, offloading and migration policies; (iii) define decision metrics considering computational load, end-to-end latency, bandwidth, packet loss/jitter, communication availability, task criticality and data freshness/temporal relevance; (iv) integrate the offloading engine with the QoS monitor and safety mechanisms so that placement decisions can adapt to link degradation, disconnection and resource variation while preserving safe operation; and (v) validate the developed mechanisms in representative simulation scenarios, comparing local-only, static offloading and adaptive migration strategies. The expected results are a reusable prototype integrated in the ADVISOR simulation framework, an experimentally validated set of offloading policies and metrics, technical documentation, and results suitable for dissemination and scientific publication. The work will contribute to the ADVISOR objective of increasing the capacity and flexibility of computationally intensive detection and classification functions through intelligent edge/cloud task migration.
The work will be developed at ISEP/ Software Technologies for Cyber Physical Systems Laboratory (SoftCPS) under the scientific supervision of Professor (PhD) Ricardo Severino.
The assessment should focus on and consider the following criteria:
Curricular Evaluation:
a)Adequacy of qualifications to the intended area/profile (40%)
b)Adequacy of the activities listed in the curriculum to the intended area / profile (60%)
The five candidates best ranked in the Curricular Evaluation may be invited for an interview; in this case the final evaluation will be performed:
a)Curricular Evaluation (70%)
b)Interview (30%)
If the Jury decides not to conduct interviews, the final evaluation will be related to the Curricular Evaluation only.
Notes: Candidates may be excluded from the contest on the following grounds:
a)Failure to meet the qualifications and requirements established in this notice (point 2.);
b)Candidates scoring less than 9.5 in any of the evaluation components will be excluded from the selection procedure, not being evaluated in the subsequent component(s);
c)Failure to attend the interview, when applicable, or to provide any additional clarifications that may be requested by the Juri, will be considered withdrawal from the competition.
The reception of applications runs from 20 October to 2 November 2026
The results of the evaluation will be disseminated by e-mail, to the e-mail adress indicated in the application file.
