Job summary

Buildout is hiring its first dedicated automation engineer to own end-to-end test automation across products. You will design Playwright tests, backfill coverage for critical journeys, and raise the bar for test quality to enable fast, reliable releases.

You’ll define strategy, partner with DevOps on where tests live, and coach engineers to write robust tests. This fully remote role offers strong compensation and growth in quality engineering leadership.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in quality engineering, test automation, or software engineering with automation focus.
• Deep hands-on Playwright expertise with end-to-end suites.
• Strong TypeScript/JavaScript proficiency suitable for production test code.
• CI/CD fluency with pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI, or similar).
• Track record of diagnosing and eliminating flaky tests at scale.
• Independence and ownership to transform vague mandates into plans.
• Teaching instincts: mentoring engineers and code reviews.

Responsibilities

• Own the E2E test suite; design, build, and maintain Playwright tests for critical journeys.
• Backfill and prioritize coverage; audit and close high-risk gaps.
• Eliminate flaky tests; establish quarantine, retries, data and environment stability.
• Shape CI integration; decide where tests run, frequency, parallelization, and gating.
• Test at the right layer; balance API/integration vs browser tests for speed.
• Coach developers on writing good Playwright tests and establish reusable patterns.
• Report quality metrics; track coverage, reliability, and defect escape rates.
• Leverage AI-assisted tooling to accelerate test authoring and maintenance.
