Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, implement, and evolve backend capabilities across our global platform. You will tackle high-scope problems, influence architectural direction, and raise the bar for reliability and performance in a remote-first environment.

You will collaborate with product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security teams, mentor engineers, and champion responsible AI integration to improve outcomes at scale.

Qualifications

• Deep backend expertise in APIs, data systems, and performance tuning.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages with systems programming understanding.
• Experience designing modular backends, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
• Strong influence, judgment, and clear written communication across teams.
• Agentic AI experience building or operating AI-powered production systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and ship backend features with minimal guidance.
• Define backend standards for security, availability, and performance.
• Mentor associate and intermediate engineers and review code.
• Diagnose performance issues at scale and participate in incident response.
• Incorporate AI in production engineering workflows and coach others.
