Job summary

NewsWhip by Sprout Social is seeking a Senior Applied AI/ML Scientist (LLM Applications) to lead end-to-end, production-grade LLM features in a fast-moving data and intelligence platform. You’ll architect agentic workflows, set prompting standards, and partner with Product and UX to ship measurable AI improvements for journalists and brands.

You’ll own design decisions around retrieval, augmentation, and model choices, while ensuring safety, observability, and cost efficiency in a hybrid

Qualifications

• 6+ years building and operating production software systems.
• 2+ years shipping LLM-powered features in real-world applications.
• Experience with OpenAI, Anthropic, or open-weight LLM APIs and transformer techniques.
• Embedding models and similarity search experience.
• Prompt engineering and structured output techniques.
• LLMOps practices (monitoring, versioning, observability).
• Track record owning a system end-to-end in production.
• Experience making architectural trade-offs (model choice, build vs buy, latency vs quality).
• Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical design reviews.
• Experience working with Product and UX on feature delivery.

Responsibilities

• Build and ship LLM-powered features.
• Architect and deliver production agentic workflows (ambient and interactive).
• Own design of LLM-powered content enrichments for reporting and alerts.
• Lead technical direction for tool-augmented LLM systems and MCP-compatible services.
• Make architecture-level decisions on retrieval, agents, fine-tuning, and model scope.
• Define structured prompting standards and reusable patterns for the team.
• Drive quality, evaluation, and observability for LLM features.
• Implement guardrails for safety, hallucination reduction, and factual grounding.
• Build observability into LLM features with tracing, cost tracking, latency budgets, and drift monitoring.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to architectural discussions.
• Stay close to frontier models and bring right techniques into the stack.
• Partner with Product and UX to translate AI ideas into shipped features.
