Job summary

HeadHR in Kraków is seeking an experienced Database Engineer to lead infrastructure initiatives, manage relational databases, and drive standardisation across the estate. You will build, maintain, and optimize database environments, supporting the transition away from physical servers while improving cost efficiency.

The role requires strong hands-on experience with Oracle/DB2/PostgreSQL/SQL Server, plus scripting and IT-ops knowledge.

Qualifications

• Strong hands-on experience with at least one enterprise RDBMS: Oracle, DB2, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server.
• Experience in database administration, maintenance, upgrades, patching, and troubleshooting.
• Shell scripting and automation: Bash, PowerShell, Python, or Ansible.
• Solid IT operations knowledge: incident and change management in controlled production environments.
• Ability to learn new database technologies quickly and adapt to evolving platforms.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and ability to explain technical topics clearly.
• Strong organizational and detail-oriented work style; able to manage multiple priorities.
• Willingness to participate in out-of-hours support when required.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage database environments, including platform upgrades and security patches.
• Support transition away from physical servers towards cost-efficient cloud/databases.
• Provide technical consultancy on design, performance, backup, and recovery.
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident investigations.
• Create and maintain runbooks and operational documentation.
• Provide clear updates on delivery progress, risks, and remediation plans.

Job description

YOU WILL

• Lead and deliver infrastructure initiatives, including platform upgrades, evergreening, standardisation, estate hygiene, and decommissioning.
• Build, maintain, and manage database environments, supporting the transition towards reduced physical server deployments and improved cost efficiency.
• Assess and deploy security patches and critical updates in line with internal security, risk, and compliance requirements.
• Evaluate new database technologies and features, build proofs-of-concept, and support their safe adoption across the environment.
• Work with cloud database services where applicable and support the evolution of the database estate.
• Provide technical consultancy to project teams on database design, resilience, performance, backup and recovery, and operational readiness.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, including standards, procedures, implementation guides, and runbooks.
• Provide management with clear updates on delivery progress, risks, dependencies, issues, and remediation plans.
• Support change and incident management activities, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis
• Participate in an on-call / support rota when required.

• Experience in database administration, maintenance, upgrades, patching, and troubleshooting
• Experience with shell scripting and automation using technologies such as Bash, PowerShell, Python, or Ansible
• Strong understanding of IT operations, including incident management, change management, and controlled production environments
• Ability to quickly learn and adopt new database technologies
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical topics to different audiences
• Strong organisational skills and a methodical, detail-oriented approach

• Willingness to participate in out-of-hours support when required
