Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented HVAC Design Engineer / HVAC CAD Designer to join our engineering team. This role is specifically focused on HVAC drafting and coordination for commercial construction projects in the United States and is not a general Mechanical Engineering position.
The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing construction-ready HVAC shop drawings, coordination drawings, as-built drawings, and material quantity takeoffs (MTO/BOM) with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate should possess strong expertise in AutoCAD, a thorough understanding of HVAC systems and construction practices, and the ability to interpret contract drawings, project specifications, RFIs, and design revisions accurately.
Key Responsibilities
HVAC Shop Drawing Preparation
- Prepare accurate and construction-ready HVAC shop drawings for commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, and public-sector projects.
- Develop detailed drawings for:
- Air distribution systems (ductwork)
- Chilled Water (CHW) piping systems
- Hot Water (HW) piping systems
- Refrigerant piping systems
- HVAC equipment layouts
Coordination Drawings
- Develop HVAC coordination drawings by coordinating mechanical systems with architectural, structural, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection disciplines.
- Identify and resolve drawing conflicts and constructability issues before fabrication and installation.
- Participate in coordination meetings with project teams when required.
As-Built Drawings
- Prepare and update accurate as-built drawings based on field markups and completed installation work.
- Maintain drawing revisions and ensure all documentation reflects the latest project changes.
Material Quantity Takeoffs (MTO/BOM)
- Prepare detailed material quantity takeoffs (MTO) and Bills of Materials (BOM) from approved shop drawings for Sheet metal ductwork, Chilled water piping, Hot water piping, Refrigerant piping, Valves, Fittings, Supports, Dampers, Air devices, Insulation, HVAC equipment
Drawing Review & Documentation
- Review contract drawings, project specifications, RFIs, bulletins, addenda, and change orders before preparing shop drawings.
- Revise drawings based on comments received from engineers, architects, clients, and site teams.
- Maintain organized drawing registers and project documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 3 years of experience preparing HVAC shop drawings.
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD (Mandatory).
- Experience using Autodesk Revit (Preferred).
- Experience with BIM, Navisworks, or other 3D modeling software is considered a strong advantage.
- Strong understanding of HVAC air distribution systems, Sheet metal ductwork, Chilled Water (CHW) systems, Hot Water (HW) systems, Refrigerant piping systems, Mechanical equipment layouts, HVAC coordination drawings, HVAC shop drawings, As-Built drawings, Material quantity takeoffs
- Ability to read and interpret U.S. construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and details.
- Familiarity with SMACNA standards and HVAC construction practices is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to work independently.
