Working remotely, the Engineer collaborates closely with the engineering team to deliver structurally sound, cost‑effective, and innovative solutions that meet Australian Standards and regulatory requirements. The role encompasses preparation of detailed calculations, structural modelling, and production of comprehensive design documentation, while maintaining high technical proficiency and commitment to excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and Analysis: Undertake structural analysis and design of building components, including foundations, steel frames, reinforced concrete elements, timber structures, and other structural systems.
- Prepare detailed structural calculations and design documentation in accordance with Australian Standards (AS), the National Construction Code (NCC), and other relevant codes of practice.
- Utilise advanced structural engineering software to model, analyse, and optimise structural designs for residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings.
- Conduct feasibility studies and provide technical recommendations to support project planning and decision‑making.
- Documentation and Drafting: Prepare and review structural drawings, specifications, and engineering reports to a high standard of quality and accuracy.
- Ensure all documentation is compliant with Australian Standards, local council requirements, and client specifications.
- Coordinate with architects, building designers, and other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless integration of structural designs within the broader project framework.
- Maintain accurate records of design changes, revisions, and project correspondence.
- Project Coordination: Collaborate with project managers, architects, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure structural designs align with project objectives, timelines, and budgets.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities as required, providing technical guidance and support throughout the project lifecycle.
- Participate in design reviews, site assessments (where applicable), and project meetings to ensure the successful delivery of engineering solutions.
- Quality Assurance and Compliance: Ensure all structural designs and documentation adhere to relevant Australian Standards, including but not limited to:
- AS 1170 (Structural Design Actions)
- AS 3600 (Concrete Structures)
- AS 4100 (Steel Structures)
- AS 1720 (Timber Structures)
- AS 2159 (Piling Design and Installation)
- AS 4678 (Earth‑Retaining Structures)
- Conduct peer reviews of structural designs and calculations to maintain quality and accuracy.
- Identify and mitigate potential structural risks, ensuring the safety and integrity of all designs.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of the latest developments in structural engineering practices, materials, and technologies.
- Contribute to the improvement of internal engineering processes, templates, and standards.
- Participate in professional development activities, including training, workshops, and industry events.
Qualifications & Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline. A Master's degree or postgraduate qualification in Structural Engineering is highly desirable.
- Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (e.g., CPEng, NER, or equivalent) is advantageous.
- Relevant certifications or memberships with professional engineering bodies, such as Engineers Australia or equivalent, are preferred.
Software
- Proficiency in structural analysis and design software, including safe for concrete slabs and foundations, AutoCAD for drafting, Tekla Structures for steel and concrete detailing (desirable).
Personality Match / Soft Skills
- Eye for detail and methodical problem‑solving, ensuring precision and accuracy in all structural calculations and designs.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to articulate complex engineering concepts clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Team‑oriented mindset, working effectively across multidisciplinary teams and different time zones.
- High degree of self‑motivation, discipline, and time management to sustain productivity in a remote setting.
- Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and professionalism.
Non‑Negotiable Skills & Requirements
- Extensive hands‑on experience applying Australian Standards, specifically AS 1170, AS 3600, AS 4100, and AS 1720, and full proficiency with the National Construction Code (NCC).
- Minimum of 5 years working on Australian projects; 10+ years preferred.
- “Ego‑free” seniority with a support mindset; focused on routine, reliable support tasks rather than leading complex design projects.
- High level of experience with software packages: RFEM, Space Gass, Strand7, ETABS, SkyCiv or ClearCalcs, Revit.
- Strong proficiency in detailed non‑linear shell finite element analysis of steel structures.
- Self‑motivation, discipline, and time management to maintain productivity without direct supervision.
