Job summary

Emapta is seeking a Senior PHP Laravel Developer to own the PHP/Laravel and MySQL production platform, ensuring reliability and scalable architecture. You will lead end-to-end ownership from development to deployment, with responsibilities across cloud operations, security, and observability.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with strong hands-on full-stack development using PHP and Laravel.
• Strong commercial experience building production-grade web applications using PHP and Laravel, with JavaScript and modern JavaScript frameworks supporting full-stack development.
• Proven end-to-end ownership of production systems across development, deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Strong SQL skills covering data modeling, schema design, query optimization, indexing, data integrity, and scalability.
• Hands-on AWS and Azure production experience, including deployments, monitoring, backups, and disaster recovery.
• Experience stabilizing and improving complex or poorly documented legacy PHP/Laravel systems.
• Knowledge of OWASP security, authentication, authorization, access control, web vulnerabilities, and secure engineering practices.
• Experience with observability, structured logging, error monitoring, metrics, tracing, automated testing, dependency management, and CI/CD.
• Able to work independently with substantial overlap during Sydney business hours (AEST/AEDT).

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture, maintenance, reliability, and continuous improvement roadmap for the PHP/Laravel and MySQL production platform.
• Manage database architecture, data models, schema design, query performance, indexing, capacity planning, and overall database health.
• Oversee cloud operations across AWS and Azure, including deployments, monitoring, backups, disaster recovery, operational readiness, and on-call rotation.
• Lead application security by managing access control, authentication, authorization, vulnerability prevention, and regular security reviews for platforms handling sensitive student data.
• Implement observability through structured logging, error-monitoring platforms such as Sentry, metrics, and tracing to accelerate root-cause analysis.
• Establish disciplined release processes through reproducible builds, pinned dependencies, committed lockfiles, automated testing, CI/CD, and staged deployments.
• Develop backend services, system integrations, and user-facing features using modern JavaScript frameworks when required.
• Improve legacy systems by reducing technical debt, modernizing undocumented code, and creating clear technical documentation.
• Collaborate with the Sydney-based technical lead on platform architecture, engineering standards, product priorities, data initiatives, and AI integrations.
