Property Accounting Supervisor / Controller

Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Central Time, with a 30-minute break
Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Property Accounting Supervisor / Controller to oversee property-level accounting operations and supervise the accounting clerk team. This person will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, and month-end close across a portfolio of approximately 1,850 units. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting and financial reporting experience, a solid understanding of GAAP, and the ability to independently review work, identify discrepancies, and ensure proper resolution. This role will also serve as a key accounting resource within the property management system and provide oversight and guidance to the accounting team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage day-to-day property-level accounting operations across the portfolio.
- Supervise, review, and provide guidance to the accounting clerk team to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of their work.
- Monitor accounting clerks' workloads and hours to support efficient team operations.
- Review monthly financial statements and supporting financial reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Oversee and manage the month-end close process, ensuring all deadlines are met.
- Review bank and account reconciliations and investigate and resolve discrepancies as needed.
- Ensure financial reporting is accurate, complete, and delivered in a timely manner.
- Manage property budgets and related financial reporting.
- Serve as the primary accounting and controller resource within the property management system.
- Identify accounting discrepancies and ensure they are appropriately investigated and resolved.
- Ensure accounting practices and procedures are maintained in accordance with GAAP.
- Provide ongoing oversight and support to the accounting team to promote accuracy, consistency, and efficient accounting processes.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Accountancy degree and a CPA license are required.
- Strong accounting and financial reporting experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing month-end close processes and account reconciliations.
- Previous experience supervising accounting staff and reviewing the work of others.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and standard accounting principles and practices.
- Property management or real estate accounting experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing property budgets and related financial reporting.
- Experience with Yardi is preferred but not required; candidates with strong property accounting experience and the ability to learn Yardi will be considered.
- Experience with HUD, public housing, affordable housing, or tax-credit housing is a major plus.
