Job Summary
The Naval Architect is responsible for the design, structural assessment, repair engineering, and technical support of shipbuilding, ship repair, and drydocking projects. The position develops engineering drawings, structural calculations, material estimates, repair plans, and technical documentation while ensuring compliance with classification society rules, international maritime regulations, customer specifications, and the company's Integrated Management System (IMS). The role also provides technical guidance during fabrication, inspection, installation, and sea trials to ensure vessels meet safety, quality, and operational requirements. This aligns well with current industry expectations for shipyard naval architects.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Engineering & Design
- Prepare ship repair and shipbuilding engineering drawings.
- Develop 2D and 3D vessel designs.
- Perform hydrostatic and stability calculations.
- Conduct structural calculations and scantling verification.
- Prepare docking plans and drydocking arrangements.
- Develop repair methodologies for damaged vessels.
- Review owner specifications and class requirements.
- Perform weight estimation and weight control.
- Prepare material take-offs and Bills of Materials (BOM).
Technical Support
- Provide engineering support to Production, QA/QC, and Operations.
- Conduct onboard inspections and vessel measurements.
- Resolve technical issues encountered during fabrication and repair.
- Coordinate with Classification Societies, vessel owners, and marine surveyors.
- Participate in technical meetings with clients.
Quality & Inspection
- Review welding procedures and repair methods.
- Verify compliance with Class Rules and IMO regulations.
- Review NDT reports including:
- Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging (UTG)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Evaluate inspection findings and recommend repair solutions.
- Prepare engineering reports and technical documentation.
Project Management
- Assist in project planning and scheduling.
- Monitor engineering deliverables.
- Coordinate with Procurement for technical materials.
- Provide cost estimates for repair works.
- Support commissioning and sea trials.
Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:

- MARINA Regulations
- IMO Requirements
- Classification Society Rules (ABS, BV, DNV, LR, NK, etc.)
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
- Licensed Naval Architect and Marine Engineer is highly preferred (or eligible for licensure).
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in:
- Shipbuilding
- Ship Repair
- Drydocking
- Marine Structural Design
- Experience dealing with Classification Societies.
- Experience supervising technical projects is an advantage.
