Job summary

Core Laboratories in Namibia (Walvis Bay) is seeking a laboratory technician to maintain day-to-day laboratory operations, perform routine and non-routine analyses, and ensure timely, accurate reporting to clients.

You will work with ASTM/IP methods, coordinate with vessel crews and terminal personnel, support safety and quality initiatives, and contribute to data bases and reporting tools while keeping up-to-date with testing standards.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent preferred.
  • Good knowledge of mathematics and administration.
  • Proficient with computers and related software.
  • Strong command of the English language.
  • Minimum two years as a laboratory technician; experience in inspection field is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain laboratory housekeeping and equipment.
  • Perform routine and non-routine analyses using ASTM/IP methods.
  • Prepare accurate computerized analysis reports.
  • Report irregularities to management and communicate with vessel/terminal operators.
  • Coordinate external calibration and outsourcing of analyses as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Overall housekeeping of the laboratory, including cleaning and maintenance of the equipment.
  • Analysis of routine and non-routine samples
  • Utilizing ASTM/IP methods to carry out above analysis, where applicable
  • To make his / her own report from the information gathered from his / her analysis. The employee will issue correct computerized analysis reports.
  • To report any irregularities or off spec results to his/her manager.
  • To communicate with several operators, as well on board of the vessels as on terminals, in order to carry out his/her activity in good order.
  • To report without delays to his/her Manager in order to speed up the information stream towards the clients.
  • To keep several data bases updated.
  • To keep him/her self updated with the latest technical changes in his/her testing area.
  • To participate in safety meetings.
  • To share his knowledge with his colleagues.
  • The employee will establish good relations with the Terminal/Refinery personnel, Vessel’s crewmembers, agencies.
  • Be actively involved with the company’s HSE compliance via inspections, checklists, safety meetings, safety observations etc
  • Communicate regularly and when required, in the WhatsApp groups and via email or telecom
  • Generate safety observation reports and check safesite stats, KPI dashboards etc
  • Assist in sending out updates to customers via email or CONNECT
  • Lead with laboratory stock requirements for reagents and consumables
  • CONNECT: create worksheets for samples, print worksheets, enter results into CONNECT
  • Assist with creating SOP’s, risk assessments, Job safety analysis etc
  • Understand and acknowledge the various testing standards eg. ISO , SANS, ASTM, IP etc
  • Co-ordinate outsourcing of analysis to 3rd party laboratories (eg. SGS, Intertek)
  • Co-ordinate external calibration activities from suppliers for the laboratory
  • Co-ordinate external calibration of life jackets. H2S monitors, fire blankets, fire extinguishers etc
  • Understand and acknowledge the various inspection standards eg. API, IFIA etc
  • SAIL 4: train & use the system for reporting of inspection activities
  • Assist with P201’s for chemical & crude oil vessels as and when the need arises
  • The employee will work on Standby regime, to cover the laboratory needs in Walvis Bay
  • The employee is being able to exercise his / her activity mainly in Namibia, but not limited to Walvis Bay.
  • The hours of work will be those applicable to the relevant work requirements and the employee is expected to adhere thereto.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Secondary school.
  • Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (preferred)
  • Good knowledge of mathematics
  • Good knowledge of administration
  • Good knowledge of computers and computer programs.
  • Good knowledge of the English Language.
  • Minimum two-year experience as laboratory technician
  • Minimum 6 months’ experience in inspection field and vessel surveys
