Job summary

Optum is seeking an ML/AI engineer to design, develop, test, and deploy AI/ML models and LLM-based agent applications for consumer-facing pharmacy and benefits experiences.

You will build multi-tool agent workflows, integrate LLMs with APIs and enterprise systems, and design robust conversation state management for multi-turn interactions. Collaboration across teams will be essential to drive scalable cloud infrastructure and strong governance for production AI deployments.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years building AI/ML or LLM-enabled applications.
• Strong Python engineering skills for production backend services and APIs.
• Hands-on experience with cloud-native development on a major cloud platform.
• Experience building and integrating LLM-based applications (prompting, tool/function calling, retrieval, evaluation).
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, code quality controls, and production incident support.
• Experience with observability and debugging in distributed systems.
• Strong ability to work collaboratively across diverse groups of business and technical stakeholders.
• Exceptional ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical people.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining AI/ML models and LLM-based agent apps for consumer-facing pharmacy and benefits management experiences.
• Build and improve multi-tool agent workflows that integrate LLMs with APIs, serverless backends, and enterprise systems.
• Design and implement conversation state, memory and context handling, and response personalization for multi-turn interactions.
• Contribute to architecture, implementation, and management of cloud infrastructure for AI solutions using IaC principles.
• Improve model and agent quality via evaluation loops, prompt tuning, and continuous experimentation.
• Design and build reusable AI/ML platforms, components, and frameworks to accelerate innovation across engineering teams.
• Exhibit technical best practices for AI systems in regulated environments.
• Stay current with generative AI and agent frameworks; propose innovative healthcare-focused solutions.
