Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is advancing health optimization globally by building AI-powered, consumer-facing pharmacy and benefits experiences. This role designs, develops, tests, and maintains AI/ML models and LLM-based agents, integrating with APIs and serverless services to deliver personalized, compliant healthcare support.

The team focuses on scalable cloud infrastructure, memory and context handling for multi-turn interactions, and continuous experimentation to improve user outcomes.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years building AI/ML or LLM-enabled applications.
• Hands-on experience with cloud-native development on a major cloud platform.
• Solid Python engineering skills and experience building production backend services and APIs.
• Experience building and integrating LLM-based applications (prompting, tool/function calling, retrieval, evaluation).
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, code quality controls, and production incident support.
• Experience with observability and debugging in distributed systems.
• Demonstrated solid ability to work collaboratively across diverse groups of business and technical stakeholders.
• Proven exceptional ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical people.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain AI/ML models and LLM-based agent apps for consumer-facing pharmacy and benefits experiences.
• Build and improve multi-tool agent workflows integrating LLMs with APIs and backend services.
• Design and implement conversation state, memory, and context handling for multi-turn interactions.
• Contribute to architecture and management of cloud infrastructure using IaC for reliable deployments.
• Improve model/agent quality through evaluation loops, prompts, and tool tuning.
• Design and build reusable AI/ML platforms and components to accelerate engineering.
• Exhibit best practices for AI systems in regulated environments.
• Stay current with generative AI advancements and propose innovative healthcare solutions.
• Comply with employment policies and directives, and adapt to changes as needed.
