Job summary

MAKINARYA seeks a Chief Engineer to lead engine room operations on our vessels, ensuring safe, reliable performance of main engines, generators, pumps and related systems.

The role requires a Marine Engineer Officer license and a degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering, with proven experience in sea-based maintenance, compliance with MARPOL, and coordination with the Captain.

Qualifications

• Must possess Marine Engineer Officer license/certificate.
• Proven experience in operation and maintenance of marine engines and auxiliary machinery.

Responsibilities

• Oversee operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of main engines, generators, pumps, compressors, and auxiliary systems.
• Monitor fuel, oil, and consumables; manage inventory and usage.
• Communicate engine status to Captain and Marine Supervisor.
• Implement preventive maintenance schedules for mechanical and electrical equipment.

Job description

Role Overview:

As a Chief Engineer, you are responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all engine room machinery and systems. You oversee the Engineering team and work closely with the Tugboat Captain and Marine Supervisor to ensure reliable vessel operations, proper maintenance, and compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

What You Will Do:

• Oversee the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of main engines, generators, pumps, compressors, and auxiliary systems.
• Monitor and check fuel, oil, and other consumables to ensure proper inventory and efficient usage.
• Communicate engine status and operational updates to the Captain and Marine Repair/Maintenance Supervisor.
• Implement preventive maintenance schedules for all mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Maintain accurate engine room logs, maintenance records, and performance reports.
• Ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards, including MARPOL regulations.
• Coordinate with the Marine Supervisor regarding spare parts, technical assistance, and major repairs.
• Ensure the engine room remains safe and fully operational during towing and navigation operations.
• Assist in maintaining vessel security by reporting any unauthorized access, theft, or pilferage incidents to the Captain or designated authority.

Qualifications:

• Graduate of a relevant Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering course.
• Must have a valid Marine Engineer Officer license/certificate appropriate for the position.
• Proven experience in the operation and maintenance of marine engines and auxiliary machinery.
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, generators, pumps, compressors, and mechanical/electrical systems.
• Willing to work onboard vessels and during towing/navigation operations.
• Previous experience as a Chief Engineer, 2nd Engineer, or similar marine engineering position is required/preferred.
