Job summary

Optum is seeking an experienced software engineer to design, build, and operate AI/ML models and large language model-based agent apps for consumer-facing pharmacy and benefits experiences. You will craft scalable workflows connecting LLMs with enterprise systems and APIs.

You will implement conversation state management, tool integration, and payment-ready cloud infrastructure, ensuring robust, compliant deployments. Strong communication and cross-team collaboration are essential.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of software engineering experience with AI/ML/LLM-enabled apps.
• Strong Python engineering skills and production backend/API experience.
• Hands-on cloud-native development on a major cloud platform.
• Experience building and integrating LLM-based applications (prompting, tool calls, retrieval, evaluation).
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, code quality controls, and production incident support.
• Experience with observability and debugging in distributed systems.
• Ability to collaborate across diverse business and technical stakeholders.
• Excellent communication with technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Own design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance of AI/ML models and LLM-based agent apps for healthcare experiences.
• Build and improve multi-tool agent workflows integrating LLMs with APIs and enterprise systems.
• Design conversation state, memory, and response personalization for multi-turn interactions.
• Contribute to cloud infra architecture using IaC for reliable deployments.
• Improve model quality via evaluation loops, prompt tuning and experimentation.
• Design reusable AI/ML platforms and components for engineering teams.
• Uphold best practices for AI systems in regulated environments.
• Stay updated on generative AI advances and propose healthcare solutions.
