Job description

Why Taurus

At Taurus Engineering, you'll be part of a practical, down-to-earth team delivering structural fabrication work we are proud to stand behind. This role gives you the chance to stay hands-on while stepping into genuine leadership, with real influence over safety, quality, workflow, and team development.

We offer steady work, a supportive workshop environment, competitive pay based on experience, and the opportunity to grow your leadership capability without losing the trade skills you have built your career on.

  • Stable structural fabrication work with a strong local pipeline
  • Hands-on leadership role with real input into how the workshop runs
  • Supportive team culture with training, mentoring, and room to grow
  • Quality-focused environment with the gear, systems, and standards needed to do good work
The role

This is a working supervisor role: you'll carry out fabrication and welding work yourself, while coordinating the team, keeping jobs on schedule, and making sure everything that leaves our workshop meets the standard it should.

What you'll be doing
  • Carrying out fabrication and welding work alongside the team, not just managing from the sidelines
  • Leading by example on safety — monitoring staff behaviour, running toolbox talks, and embedding our health and safety procedures on the floor
  • Coordinating daily and weekly workshop schedules to hit production goals, and adjusting priorities as jobs demand
  • Overseeing quality control and QA on outgoing work, including ensuring welders follow WPS/PQR work instructions
  • Coaching and mentoring workshop staff — building skills, morale, and accountability across the team
  • Keeping on top of the admin side: progress reports, incident reports, and job tracking
  • Using basic computer systems for workshop administration, including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, timesheets, job tracking, and production records
  • Working with common timesheet and job management applications, or similar systems used for workshop administration
  • Maintaining plant, equipment, and housekeeping standards across the workshop
What we're looking for
Must have
  • A trade-qualified tradesperson with 5–10 years' experience in a fabrication or welding environment
  • Solid working knowledge of AS/NZS welding and quality requirements and the ability to read and work from plans
  • Genuine leadership presence — someone the team will follow because they see you doing the work, not just directing it
  • A practical, safety-first mindset, with an understanding of Health and Safety at Work Act obligations
  • Strong communication skills — comfortable coaching staff, resolving day-to-day issues, and reporting up to the Workshop Manager when it matters
  • Basic computer literacy, including confidence using Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, and simple reporting or record-keeping systems
  • Ability to use or learn timesheet and workshop management applications relevant to the business
  • Someone who takes ownership: reliable, adaptable, and committed to seeing jobs through when it counts
Nice to have
  • Previous experience leading or mentoring a workshop team
  • Experience with structural steel fabrication, QA documentation, or WPS/PQR processes

If you have most of what we are looking for and are ready to take the next step, we encourage you to apply. Tell us about your fabrication experience, leadership style, and the kind of workshop team you want to help build.
