Job summary

OneStaff is seeking an experienced Structural Steel Fabricator for a busy Auckland workshop. You will handle the process from raw steel to finished, inspection-ready products, reading drawings and following schedules to produce accurate components such as beams, columns and base plates.

You will predominantly MIG weld, operate shop equipment, and ensure conformance to tolerances and safety standards. A strong track record and full NZ work rights are essential.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as Structural Steel Fabricator with 10–15+ years.
  • Able to read and interpret shop drawings without supervision.
  • Sound MIG welding skills across a range of material thicknesses and positions.
  • Full NZ Driver Licence; legal right to work in New Zealand.
  • Physically fit and capable of working in a busy engineering workshop.

Responsibilities

  • Read and work from structural steel shop drawings, member schedules and cutting lists.
  • Mark out, cut, drill, prep and assemble structural members to required tolerances.
  • Weld to AS/NZS 1554.1 (GP and SP welds) using MIG/GMAW and FCAW.
  • Operate workshop equipment including bandsaws, mag drills, oxy equipment and grinders.
  • Check completed fabrication against drawings before coating or dispatch.
  • Prepare and load fabricated steel for transport to site.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workshop; follow PPE, hot-work and safe lifting requirements.

Job description

We are currently looking for an experienced Structural Steel Fabricator to join a busy engineering workshop. This role is suited to a tradesperson who is confident working independently from structural shop drawings and can take a job from raw steel through to a finished, inspection-ready product.

You’ll be fabricating a range of structural steel components including beams, columns, base plates, cleats, bracing, stairs and portals.

The Role

Day to day, you will:

  • Read and work from structural steel shop drawings, member schedules and cutting lists
  • Mark out, cut, drill, prep and assemble structural members to required tolerances
  • Weld to AS/NZS 1554.1, including GP and SP welds
  • Predominantly use MIG/GMAW and FCAW welding processes
  • Operate workshop equipment including bandsaws, mag drills, oxy equipment and grinders
  • Check completed fabrication against drawings before coating or dispatch
  • Prepare and load fabricated steel for transport to site
  • Maintain a clean and safe workshop environment
  • Follow all PPE, hot-work and safe lifting requirements
What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Proven experience as a Structural Steel Fabricator, ideally with 10–15+ years' experience
  • Strong ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings without supervision
  • Sound MIG welding skills across a range of material thicknesses and positions
  • Good understanding of fabrication tolerances and structural steel quality requirements
  • Ability to mark out and fabricate accurately from drawings
  • Physically fit and comfortable working in a busy engineering workshop
  • Reliable, punctual and capable of working unsupervised
  • Full NZ Driver Licence
  • Legal right to work in New Zealand

Highly Regarded:

  • Current welding qualification to AS/NZS 2980
  • Familiarity with AS/NZS 5131 construction categories and SFC requirements
  • Forklift licence with F endorsement
  • Overhead crane or gantry crane experience/tickets
