Hi-Tech Engineering Services Limited – Hamilton, North Island is seeking an experienced Workshop Manager to lead our welding and fabrication workshop. You will manage daily operations, lead the team, coordinate production and ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

You will drive continuous improvement, protect quality and safety, allocate resources, read drawings and coordinate with engineers and customers to deliver on-time results in a small family-owned

Qualifications

  • Experience in welding/fabrication or engineering workshop.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety requirements in a workshop.
  • Proven ability to plan, organise and prioritise production.
  • Experience in supervising or managing workshop teams.
  • Trade qualification in welding or related engineering trade preferred.
  • Knowledge of NZ/AS-NZS standards advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage day-to-day workshop operations.
  • Plan and coordinate jobs, workloads and production schedules.
  • Allocate work to welders and fabricators based on skills and project requirements.
  • Monitor progress, productivity, quality and deadlines.
  • Provide practical and technical support to the workshop team.
  • Ensure work meets drawings, specifications and customer requirements.
  • Maintain high standards of welding, fabrication and workmanship.
  • Foster a strong health and safety culture including toolbox talks and PPE compliance.
  • Manage workshop staff including training, performance and development.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, customers and suppliers.
  • Ensure materials, machinery and equipment are available and well maintained.
  • Monitor capacity, labour requirements and production efficiency.
  • Resolve production issues, delays and quality concerns.
  • Minimise rework and material wastage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage day-to-day workshop operations.
  • Plan and coordinate jobs, workloads and production schedules.
  • Allocate work to welders and fabricators based on skills and project requirements.

  • Minimise rework, material wastage and unnecessary costs.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and productive workshop.
  • Drive continuous improvement across workshop processes and performance.
Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in a welding, fabrication or engineering workshop.
  • Strong knowledge of welding and fabrication processes.
  • Previous workshop supervision or management experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of workshop health and safety requirements.
  • Good planning, organisation and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Trade qualification in welding, fabrication or a related engineering trade is preferred.
  • Experience working toNew Zealand/AS-NZS standardsis advantageous.
