Job summary

Stellar Recruitment is seeking an experienced Workshop Supervisor for our Christchurch client. This hands-on leadership role oversees the day-to-day operations of a busy fabrication workshop, guiding a small team of fabricators and welders with room to grow the team.

You will plan and schedule workshop activities, provide day-to-day leadership and technical support, monitor quality and safety, and drive continuous improvement while ensuring projects are delivered on time and to budget.

Qualifications

About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Workshop Supervisor to join our engineering client in Christchurch. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you will oversee the day‑to‑day operations of a busy fabrication workshop while providing guidance and support to a small team of fabricators and welders with room to grow this team.

Duties

With a diverse range of current and upcoming projects including wastewater infrastructure works, strengthening projects, and specialist engineered products, this role offers variety and the opportunity to play a key part in successful project delivery. While the role is primarily supervisory, there may be occasions where you will spend approximately 10-20% of your time on the tools. Duties will include:

• Planning and scheduling workshop activities and production requirements
• Providing day‑to‑day leadership and technical support to the fabrication team
• Monitoring quality control and ensuring that completed work meets specifications
• Maintaining a strong focus on health, safety, and compliance standards
• Driving workshop systems, processes, and continuous improvement initiatives
• Reading and interpreting engineering and fabrication drawings
• Coordinating workflow to ensure projects are delivered on time and to budget
• Liaising with internal teams to ensure efficient project execution
• Assisting with fabrication and welding activities when required

Key Requirements & Responsibilities

• Previous experience leading, mentoring, or coordinating workshop teams
• Proven experience within a welding and fabrication environment
• Ability to read and interpret engineering and fabrication drawings
• Strong understanding of workshop safety, quality, and compliance requirements
• Experience planning and scheduling workshop workloads
• Excellent communication and organisational skills
• A proactive approach with strong problem‑solving abilities
• Structural steel fabrication experience would be advantageous but is not essential
• Reliable, dependable, and committed to a long‑term career opportunity
• Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Must be able to pass a pre‑employment drug test and have no serious criminal convictions
