Job description

Mercury is a bold future-focused organisation, providing energy and telecommunications to more Kiwis than anyone else, leading the way with renewable energy and working toward a sustainable future. At the heart is our purpose. Taking care of tomorrow: connecting people and place today. This pushes us to do all we can to create a better future for our people, our communities, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Mercury’s wind portfolio is growing, and we are looking for a Wind Asset Engineer to help ensure our wind farms continue to perform safely, reliably and efficiently.

This is a broad asset role with a strong electrical engineering focus. You will provide technical oversight of wind maintenance and performance, with particular involvement in Balance of Plant equipment, environmental matters and the management of emerging asset issues.

You will join a small team with significant responsibility and the autonomy to shape how you approach your work. The role is preferably based in Hamilton, although Palmerston North may be considered. Some travel to wind farm locations will be required, but it is not a major part of the role.

Tāu e mahi ai | What you’ll be doing

You will work with site teams, contractors, original equipment manufacturers and specialists across Mercury to support the performance and ongoing development of our wind assets.

In this role, you will:

  • Monitor asset performance and identify emerging issues, supporting them through to resolution
  • Review technical test and inspection reports for Balance of Plant equipment and engage specialist support where needed
  • Provide technical oversight of planned and unplanned maintenance activities
  • Support effective maintenance planning, quality assurance, work completion and cost management
  • Lead root cause failure analysis for significant events and recurring issues
  • Track turbine and station outages and contribute to production and maintenance expenditure forecasting
  • Report on asset performance and production
  • Coordinate contractors and maintain productive relationships with site teams, service providers and equipment manufacturers
  • Contribute to improvements in maintenance programmes, technical documentation, policies and processes
  • Help ensure work meets Mercury’s health, safety, environmental, quality and compliance requirements

The position description also identifies responsibility for maintenance delivery, asset performance monitoring, contractor management, outage tracking and continuous improvement across Mercury’s wind assets.

You will bring a strong electrical engineering foundation and an interest in applying your expertise across a wider range of asset, maintenance and operational challenges.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant technical experience
  • Experience in asset engineering, maintenance, plant operations, process control or a comparable heavy-industry environment
  • The ability to interpret technical reports, analyse asset performance and work through complex equipment issues
  • Experience working with maintenance management systems, quality processes and continuous improvement
  • Confidence coordinating contractors and building effective relationships across technical and operational teams
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • A practical, considered approach and the ability to manage work with a good level of autonomy
  • Wind energy experience and knowledge of wind asset management or operations would be valuable. However, we are also open to candidates with relevant transferable experience who are interested in working beyond a solely electrical engineering remit.
  • Additional 5 days leave per annum (MyDays)
  • $400 one off tax-free payment towards setting up your home office
  • Offers on electricity and telco - if you're a Mercury customer, you can enjoy some great discounts on your electricity and telco bill
  • A diverse workplace where your unique abilities and talents will be recognised and encouraged
  • Annual salary reviews with excellent parental leave policy, with the option to purchase additional leave
  • The opportunities, career paths and facilities associated with working for one of New Zealand's largest multi-utility providers
  • Flexible working policy - The autonomy and trust to work flexibly from our purpose-built premises and from home, recognising the value of this flexibility in the modern world
  • Discounted health insurance and free life and income insurance
  • Excellent well-being programme including up to $100 annual check-ups and confidential assistance programme
  • Gender affirmation leave and supportive bereavement leave to be taken when you lose anyone close to you, including your pet
